Just a little BEWARE with credit cards as I recently got bitten.  We pay off the balance of our credit card each month when the statement comes.  A few months ago for some stupid reason I paid the bill but was about £2 or £3 pound short, This was simply a senior moment.  Anyway, the next statement came with interest charges of £18.  I rang them and was told that if you don't clear the whole amount, they charge you interest on the whole amount, despite the fact you've only left £2 or £3 outstanding.  The following month they charged me another £2 interest, because (they told me after ringing them again) that this interest charging period goes over two months.  So, if you do like to clear the balance in one go, make sure you do just that.

OK this is an old thread, but some of the posts make interesting reading going of what the £ is doing against the € at the moment.

We never buy any cash € before we go to France, and just get the going rate at the time we are there with our N&P Debit card for cash withdrawals and Halifax Clarity MasterCard Credit Card for all none cash transactions.

Both Cards make no charges whatsoever for converting £ to € and the exchange rate is the interbank rate which is as good as it gets, the Halifax even gives us £5 reward for the fun of it.

With the £ currently buying 1.23€ that's got to be good news for those of us going over to Europe for our holidays this year, and it even looks as though the £ may get even stronger yet.

We are new Clarity card users, and plan to check the Clarity v Nationwide cards debate for ourselves this Summer in France. Will report back.

Yep, forgot to mention no ATM charges with N&P Debit Card, although like in the UK there are ATM machines that will charge, although this will be displayed on screen, so you can avoid and just use ATM's that don't charge.

That's Impressive. They're just under 1.22 at the moment, but Thomas Cook are very close to that rate too. Good to see the rate nudging upwards.

It would feel a bit odd going over there without actual readies in the pocket! If I can get 1.22 or thereabouts at home I'll take the slight hit over the better rate you quote. More a habit than anything else I guess.

I've come to the conclusion that life is too short to worry about a few quid you might be able to save if you spent hours researching the very best deal.

My only caveat is to have a good debit card for ATM withdrawals, a good credit card for non-cash purchases and back ups in case of lost or stolen.

Yep Ollie, I agree life is to short to worry about exchange rates, we only go through well under 1000€ in cash for our 3 weeks over in France, the bulk of spend is none cash so the Credit Card gets used for that spend. Our total spend whilst away for 3 weeks is less than £1500 so a few points up or down for the £ against € is neither here or there in the great scheme of things.

Back in the day, when there were no ATM's and no where took Credit Cards, we used to take cash, stuffed in various parts of the car, along with a fistful of Travellers Cheques, so glad those days are in the past.

These days we just keep 50€ cash back from the previous holiday! which is more than enough cash to see use through to the first ATM machine when we land in France.

ECB has cut interest rates slightly so value of € should be going south along with Brits going south on their hols.
