Hello

I am hoping to take my family to the Ile de re in late August and wondering if anyone could suggest a suitable not too busy site for a young family. Also any suggestions about best beaches, cycle routes and restaurants would be greatly valued. Thanks.

There is a toll bridge to get on and off the Island, so you might want to make sure you have a place to stay before you go there. I haven't been, but heard that the Camping Cheque site used to get full up, and campers were miffed that they had paid to get onto the island, only to find they couldn't use their camping cheques.

We have been to Oleron a few times, just a bit further south. Their bridge is now paid for, and therefore toll free. Cycling is excellent.

Stayed at Camping Interlude in 1999. Not a bad site with an easy walk to the beach (not difficult on this island) although some of the pitches were quite small.

The toll is expensive so you really only want to cross it twice (to get there and back). There aren't many big shops on the island so try to stock up at Carefour in La Rochelle before you go onto the island.

This island is ideal for cycling as there are cycle paths everywhere you look, even traffic lights for cyclists to cross certain roads.

As for size, it's a bit like the Isle of Wight, two weeks   and you've seen everything.

We have been to Ile de re twice... and both times were fantastic. Mum,  Dad, 4 year old and a 7 year old.

I disagree with Waldovia (sorry) about the shops, there are plenty, Intermarche and SuperMarche in St. Martin. Very Very reasonable priced too.  Also there are fantastic markets every morning.

We stayed at Interlude as well, and our site was perfectly big enough, for a peugeot 807, 4 bikes, plus chairs/table etc.  The first year we went off the island once - that was to visit the Aquarium in La Rochelle, the second year, we didnt leave it once - there was simply no need to.

If you like cycling (we hired our from Cycland in Le Bois) it cost us £120.00 for 4 bikes for 13 days - which we didnt think was bad.  The lsland is beautiful, very relaxing and great weather, in both years we had perhaps 1 day of "warm" rain.

The restaurants are great too - very child friendly - excellently priced as well.  eg,  5 courses for £13.50!!!!!!!! all fresh as well.

Anything else I can help you with just ask!!!!!!!!!

Amanda

That's OK
Considering the island is set up for cycling there was nowhere to BUY a cycle. We had to go onto the mainland to buy two.
We promised our two youngest if they learnt to ride their bikes without stabilisers during the first week there, we would buy them new bikes for the second week.
They both learnt on the first day
At least bikes are half the price in France.
