Hi All, doing the Great Ocean Road by motorhome, in October, we are going from Adelaide to Melbourne, got some good reading material for a bit of research, what I would like to know is has anyone done all or part of this journey in October, do you need to book sites or can you just turn up? Any other advice would be great fully recived. Many thanks in advance Paul
P.S. any sites you can recommend?

Yes we've done it in a hire car but weren't camping there.  But in other parts of Australia we rolled up un-booked at camp sites and rented static caravans for one or two nights and moved on. That was going round the south east corner from Sydney to Adelaide. Generally we found a hire car + those static caravans or motels cheaper and easier than campervan hire. We did the same in North Island New Zealand too, and again rejected motor home hire for motels.  Either way round October isn't peak season.

Although it was 10 years ago we did a similar trip in April/May/June, from Perth across the Nullabor and then on round to Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. We leased a car for 6 months and had camping equipment with us. We used mainly Big 4 and Top Tourist campsites as well as some motels. We did not book anywhere as we did not know where we were going to be next. Just turn up in a town by about 4.00pm, go to the information bureau and they will always find you somewhere to stay. We found most of the campsites had either cabins or static type caravans to hire on a daily basis for quite a reasonable cost.
Have an enjoyable trip, you will love it and we envy you as we would love to go again.

Greetings,

Before you get to the GOR proper there are towns at the coast that are off the main road and a VERY worthy of the small detour. I'm thinking specifically of Port Fairy and Warnambool. I would hate for you to go past either of those and think it not worth it.

We've done Adelaide to Melbourne and back about 12 years ago in a hire car.  We stayed in static/chalet on campsites.  We didn't book any of ours sites and only experienced one problem finding a site with vacancies. As a result we just drove further on and found a very bizarre campsite in Port Fairy (an old Irish town that wouldn't look out of place in cowboy films).  The campsite was an experience in itself, but is one that we remember the most and talk a lot about!
