Hi we are going to the South of France in July. I would like to take my IPad but where we are staying does not have wifi. What is the cheapest way to be able to use the IPad abroad. It's an IPad 2 with 3G.

Depends what you want to use it for. Free WiFi in Macdonalds would be my choice if your site doesn't have WiFi. Otherwise you can buy a European use quota (bundle) from your network operator. I know Orange don't do an unlimited bundle but perhaps your operator does, imagine they'll charge you well for it though.

Are you sure? Not that I'm particularly looking for it I'm sure most sites (of any size) have wifi.

Most bars will have wifi. You'll have to buy a drink to get the code but they rarely change it. My eldest soon discovered the cheapest drink was an espresso for which he then got wifi for the time we were in the area - ten days while we were in Vallon.

Does the 'private house' have broadband that you can have access to (i.e. do you know the owners)? Could you take a wireless router?

It will cost an arm and a leg to use 3g, it's not free and overseas use is very expensive - very quickly using your monthly limit (kindle 3 g is the excepton). We took our ipad last year and wouldnt even have attempted to use the 3g having been well warned in advance by the mobile companies I asked re cost. Wifi is usually free.

Many shopping centres (Leclerc, Carrefour etc.) have free wifi hotspots and so do many towns - - even some small ones. Whenever you are in public places it is worth trying your i pad to see if there is a hotspot.

Somewhere on this forum, in the past, someone posted a link which gave you a website listing all the WiFi hotspots in Europe and showing them as pins on a map.  I intended to keep it in 'favourites' but didn't do so - so if anyone knows which website I'm referring to it would be useful to have the link posted again.

Hi,
I was chatting to the assistant in our local 3 shop. - I was looking of a Mi-fi device for work but - apparently for an additional £15 you can have the mi-fi unlocked by 3 and then buy a data sim card when you are in france (various phone shops in cite europe for example.)
a mi-fi is similar to a dongle but wireless and you can connect up to 5 devices to it at any one time which is ideal if like me you travel with kids with smart phones, iPads and netbooks.

But new price caps imposed by EU in Brussels say all mobile use "far cheaper" in Europe from 1st July 2012
