Hi, we really really want to go to Brittany in our caravan in the summer holidays, BUT we don't have a clue about ANYTHING :(

We don't know what these Camping Cheques are? We don't know how to find suitable sites.  We are a family of four (kids 6 & 8), so we'd lke to be near the seaside, and it would be great if there was a pool onsite but not essential.

When I looked on the Caravan Club website, a week, without the tunnel crossing was coming up at £250 (for 23rd july, 7 nights), is that about right?  I'd been lead to believe we could do it for much less????

See what I mean about being confused!!!!!!!

Any advice would be brilliant.

Thanks

Camping cheques probably are no good for you as they are only for low season - usually not July and August.

Please have a look at http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=7&TopicID=82183&PagePosition=1 which will inform you about going abroad for the first time.

What ferry crossing are you looking at.   The cheapest is still probably DFDS from Calais to Dunkirk.  When you have priced a crossing then come back for info. on sites in Brittany but they will be more expensive in July than in June or September.

Here is one to start you off with British Owners but not at the seaside

Found it cheaper to book things individually rather than through one of the clubs. A little bit more work but well worth the saving.

I agree with fleetwood99, well worth sorting your own holiday rather than through a holiday company.

Check out the campsite search facility above. Brittany like most of France has a really good selection of sites to cater for all tastes. You cant go wrong with anywhere along the south coast of Brittany.

Just get on the ferry and go, discovering things and making cock ups is all part of the fun.

I clearly remember my first ever trip to Lille in the 60's. Went round roundabouts the wrong way, probably insulted more French people with my Franglish than I need have done but it was great and fascinating.

Get on the ferry and go, explore, find things, make mistakes, its what life's all about

Thanks I have also bookmarked that on if we are ever in brittany - looks like our kind of small site although may be a bit too "british" if you know what I mean!

Hi
I've just checked the price on a site we like and it comes out at 318 euros for a pitch, 2 adults, 2 children and 10A elec for 1 week on 23/7. This would be about £265 if the exchange rate is 1.20/£1.
The site is Camping de la Piscine, near Beg Meil/Benodet, owned by a french family, lovely pool and within walking distance of a lovely beach. It would depend which crossing you use and where you live, but this area is 2 hours from Roscoff (Brittany ferries from Plymouth). The tunnel or Calais ferries would be cheaper with about a 10hr drive & stopover. The north coast of Brittany is also lovely, you could look around St. Cast or Perros Guirec.

The price I mentioned was direct with the campsite, there may be offers with the C & CC if you book a crossing as well (the overall price is often cheaper). Similar offers are available with CC but they don't do this site, they have others in this area though.

For much less than £250, for a week, with kids, peak season, near the coast? No idea who you've been talking to, but they've been pulling your leg, I reckon!  Some of the sites we have looked at, admittedly very nice ones, but stil campsites, not 5* hotels, come out at over £60 a night in high season in France.

Yes, it's possible to get cheaper than that, but much cheaper......I dunno. you will struggle to find a decent site in peak season for less than E30,00 a night. Especially near the coast.

nic3101.  If you don't mind something a little way from the sea there are campsites like www.campingvertcreachlann.com  for about 20 euros per night.

It is possible to 'do it cheaper' than the prices you quote, If you could go on the 23rd August instead of the 23rd July!  Then you'd have a choice of many more sites, and could take advantage of a discount scheme such as Camping Cheques, (www.campingcheque.co.uk for details) or the ACSI card (www.campingcard.co.uk).  Both of these are discount schemes, which offer a package of a pitch, two adults, car and caravan, awning, and electricity for one night - with ACSI at one of four rates, 10, 12, 14, or 16 euros, and with Camping Cheques at £13.95.

Both are available on some sites from the middle of August  not, however, on the 23rd July which is absolutely peak week in France.  Prices are highest then, and pitches harder to find.  But just a month later makes all the difference.  A quick search shows a number of campsites in Brittany, which take the ACSI card from 24th August - some at just 12 euros per night, and one (De la Baie at Terenez) includes three children under 6 in that price and has a pool and another Camping St Laurent near Carnac also is 12 euros per night, offers free under 6's  and has an indoor pool just in case the weather isn't so good!!
