Hello, We are travelling from Calais on the 11th August to a campsite called Moulin de la Geneste in Limousin (Hopefully)! Could anybody tell me the best way to travel down over maybe 3 days with children in a motorhome? We don't want to go anywhere near Paris!! Ideally a scenic route? Is 3 days too long or not long enough? Would we be able to just travel and see what happens and still get a space at Aires at this time of year or do I need to book sites? Does anyone have any good recommendations for Aires or sites which ever you think is more appropriate??

Could be getting a little stressed now.....................

Thankyou

The route most would take is Calais, Abbeville, Rouen, Chartres, Orleans, Vierzon, & down past Limoges. Not particularly scenic but you can avoid the 2 main sections of toll rds on this route by taking the roads beside them. Good choice of campsites along the route, no need to book, just aim to park up by about 5pm. I'd do the route in 2 days. Any longer & it will get boring unless there is something particular you want to see.

Hi Helen and Andy, We are going there too! But we go on 20th July - 4 Aug so we will miss you. The site looks lovely. Our first time camping abroad, really looking forward to it. We have planned to go on the above route and stop around Chartres but maybe not the main one in centre..

If you have a motorhome you have no parking problems in France. Towns often have motorhome aires(aire de campingcar)signposted or you will often see motorhomes parked by rivers etc in carparks together without problem. Nobody will object to you parking overnight in town centre carparks or even supermarket car parks, so you have plenty of choice if campsite is full, but is unlikely for a municipal if you arrive by about 5pm.

All this is better than parking overnight at a motorway services or rural parking place beside a main road.

Thankyou Tentz,

That puts my mind a ease a little, we used Aires at Easter but we were worried we would be struggling to find space  in the summer esp with the kids so thats reassuring to know.

Not too bad, we did it in 2010 stopping off in Le Mans quite leisurely. We set off at about 2am, get an early tunnel (6.50ish) and were in Le Mans early afternoon, pitched and in the pool, meal in the restaurant for tea, set off 10am ish next day, again on site mid afternoon.
That was before we had the trailer tent though, daresay it will take a bit longer with it this year.
