Can anyone explain what these are and if we will need them
We are camping in France for 2 weeks from 16th June, 2 adults mid 30's and we have our own travel insurance. Just not sure if we still require the E111 form by law or if it's an alternative to private medical insurance
Thanks in advance :-)

You are not required by law to carry them but not to do so would be unwise. They are your proof of entitlement to medical care in the European community.
Your travel insurance may require you to carry one and may refuse to pay for care you could have got for free with an E111. I know my insurance did on one occasion.
Some personal insurance policies charge an excess on medical treatment if you don't carry one of the health cards. Given that they a free it seems a bit of a no brainer not to get one and it lasts for several years.

Yes just apply online from the link posted, its free. Beware that if you google 'EHIC card' you will get official looking websites that charge you a fee for applying on your behalf. These are basically con artists so be sure that you apply on the actual NHS website.
