Hi we are off on a bit of a road trip to France in August with our motohome and 3 young children. We are quite new to this so any tips especially relating to Disney, what's parking like etc. We have booked 3 nights at Iris Camp before going onto another camp we stayed in last year in Brittany. Also what are French ayers?? like are they any good for a stopover? Is it always necessary to book campsites ahead or could we wing it for a few nights?
Thanks in advance for all advice
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
You could 'wing it' - if you don't want all-singing/all-dancing sites! There are so many smaller sites in France that you'll always find somewhere. Aires de Camping Car are frequent in many villages, and signposted, though some are now charging, and in my opinion, for most we've seen, if you have to pay you may as well stay on a municipal campsite.
We did see a lovely free one down by the Canal du Midi at Colombiers, with hook-up and water points free of charge! I would happily have stayed there, but one at St Pierre de Mer the Aire is just a dusty sandy car park and charges 6 euros per night with barriered access and payment by card.
Disneyland Paris has a large carpark for motorhomes, currently charging 30 Euro for 24 hours but I cannot help with details of facilities there for them as we only saw them when passing on the La Croix bus. (the charge details were on the DLP website)
This may help with the DLP Parking, taken around 3 years ago it seems.
Thanks for this. I had seen the thing about parking in other reviews but couldn't find it on the
DPL website so I'llnlook again, thought it might be useful in getting an early start but our campsite is( hopefully) only 25 mins away so we'll see how it goes.
There are no official facilities for motorhomers, the building nearby is coach drivers rest area but it is open and motorhomers are known to use the showers and tolilets.
Depending on where you are in the country booking varies, the coast on the west and the south would need booking in August for campsites to ensure you are on. The champagne region north of Paris, nope. We were there last July/August and didn't book.
The aires in France are designed for motorhomes to stay overnight, most towns and villages have them. There is a book called "all the aires" which has them in or you can just turn up and look for one signed in a town. I would avoid the motorway ones, these are a difference kettle of fish to the nicer ones in towns and villages.
Every aire is different, some charge a small fee, some are free.
This is one at Gravelines (nr Calais for the tunnel)
This is at Haybes on the Belgium border
Vendeuvre-sur-barse (just the town carpark overnight)
Lac Due Der Chantecoq
Chaource
We use the aires to keep the costs down and stay on sites every few days for nicer showers and water fills etc.
We've just come back from Disneyland Paris...we did stay in the Disneyland Hotel, but the park is amazing...enjoy yourselves, but be prepared to be really, really tired...lots of walking and standing around. The queues weren't too bad when we went at the beginning of this week, between 15 & 30 minutes for most rides, but there are queueing systems in place for much longer queues!
