I would just like to say thanks to all for their advice on this subject, and apologise for the very late reply to all concerned. We are still in the throws of getting our act  together !!!!, and will try and keep you all posted as we proceed.

It's a lot cheaper and a lot more choice if you do it outside of the clubs.

Not really, it works out at around £9 a day on a serviced pitch so not much around less than that. There are other rally sites available or you could possibly pay £8 a night if you wish to stay 3 months or so on a site with few or not very good facilities.

At the moment prefer to be on the rally.

I can do it cheaper with more flexibility myself. The club does not have exclusivity on sites with good facilities. You go your way i'll go mine.

If you feel the need of a club back up etc then fine. We find the independence suits us much better than following "britain abroad" and the support we find on independent sites and local management second to none.
"wintering" does suggest a stay of 3 months plus. Not necessarily on the same site.

This will be our 6th winter( Nov-Mar) in Spain and
we never book in advance!

We want to see the pitch,(is there a liklehood somebody could park next door and block my sun)shower block, see who the neighbours are, how far is it to walk to pubs/eating places/shops,and what are the prices like when you go out in the evening.

Being there for several months all of the above matters.

Spot on Leomar , as you know in mid winter in Spain the sun is quite weak and you definately dont want to be in the shade . We pick our pitch a year in advance but it does not always work out as two years ago a big German unit moved right next to us blocking the sun until after lunch and he had the choice of a numerous pitches without bothering anybody but he pays his money and has his choice.

Would say that La Manga is not our preferred choice to over winter the hedges are to high and the site to big but thats our choice . We stay at Cabo De Gata (Almeria) great for dogs and good ambiance with all the different nationalities mind you some campers find it a little to out of the way
