Last year I tried to obtain some beam deflectors for my Audi that has Xenon self adjusring headlamps. My dealer told me that they would remap the beams for France to save trying to use stickers, which he said could get sticky on the lights due to heat of the Xenons and can be difficult to position correctly.
My nearer dealer wanted about £80 to do this, the dealer I purchased the car from did it FOC for me and changed them back FOC on my return.
The problem I have this year is on my return from France I will be going to Hampshire for the bank holiday within a few days of returning from France and do not want to pay £80 to convert the lights back as it will be difficult to get to my purchasing dealer before going to Hampshire.

It looks as though I will have to use stick on ones, are there any suitable for self adjusting Xenons?
Thanks

To be honest, we've never stuck ours on...we have a standard set in the car but just never got around to sticking them on...I badger the husband about it every year, but he never does it...we never drive at nightime and have so far got away with just having the dipped beam on in poor weather.

Dave 11

I had the same issue as you on my Landrover, however the CC club say that these are compulsary in Europe even in the daytime (Tunnels etc), I have fitted the deflectors purchased in halfords and so far so good.

Eurolites (available from Halfrauds) will fit the Audi.
I had a similar problem in a Merc- the garage adjusted the beam to symmetric for the hols and said they didn't need to be put back so long as I didn't mind the beam pattern, what the MOT people would think about the symmetric pattern I wouldn't know, but I'm thinking of getting the pattern on the A6 changed....

A couple of bits of black tape will keep you looking 'legal' & cleans off easily.

Hi Jaiash, they did not change the beam pattern as such, when I took it into Audi they hooked the car up to the computer and changed the beam for driving on the opposite side . It would not be possible to forget when getting back ,as each time you start the car a message comes on the display system to say the headlights have a fault.
Saves the stickers but downside it has to go back to garage to be out back.

I wanted to make sure they are correct , especially as their are often tunnels . The audii Xenons are very bright and did not want risking dazzling oncoming drivers. If they ended side swiping your car or causing an accident because of it, could cause a lot of grief !

we got some beam benders that stayed on through 500 miles of rain and then both fell off somewhere around Spain so on the way home I just use my lights dipped in the tunnels and whilst it was raining, looking for a better option for our car too

I'm not at all sure that modern UK car headlights do dazzle on dip when driving on right. If you refer to other current thread on this you will see I have a letter from Citroen stating that there is no need to mask headlights on't continent at least on Mk3 Berlingo. I would guess its because the dips are directed along rd surface & not at eye level.

Whether French cops have ever nicked a UK motorist simply for having nothing stuck on their headlamps, I have no idea.

Don't know why you get a warning light... the beam pattern for 'wrong' side of the road would be symmetric as opposed to ours which is asymmetric, so the change would make it just like the left hand drive models. Do you not have within the computer settings a choice to alter to continental driving in the lighting section?? My A4,2009, had that but unfortunately not the A6 which is 2011. Does your local dealer have a 'master' technician as the one in Derby is an absolute wiz!! with the technical settings and the computer gizmos.

Hi Jaiash
When they remapped the lights they said it would show on the dash warning system as fault with the headlights. When they do it the beam patterns have been changed for Euro use but mine is Uk model. Obviously the cars computer system detects this overide. They told me this is quite normal and goes when headlights are remapped back for UK use.
The great advantage is the headlights can be fully used dipped or main beam without blocking part of the light or bending the beams with prism stickers. I used to use stickers on previous cars where I could put stickers on and know exactly where to place them. With Xenons that are behind covers it is difficult to know where to put them to make them effective?

As I understood it, the continental dip is downwards rather than to one side (British lights dip to the left) and therefore would not dazzle UK motorists if left on that setting upon a return to the UK. I am not an expert though so would stand to be corrected!

Fortunately such is not a concern for me as the headlamps in my old car take about 30 seconds to convert for driving on the right. Progress eh?

Yes my BMW has manual lever on each light that you simply flick over whether driving on left ro right. This is with Xenons with self levellers and adaptive lights (follow corners)

Not sure how the Audi system works but may be worth checking Audi forums for any "hidden menu" access like you can on BMW's again

My Saab has little adjusters on the back of the lights which move the beam (need a small hex key). Kia uses the stick on deflectors!

Is it possible to buy the plastic continental headlight protectors from the dealer? A one-off outlay versus continued expense.

I have these for my Volvo and are a sinch to fit, taking about 10 secs to fit each side! No sticky residue, no faffing and with the added bonus that the chance of getting a broken headlamp in the depths of some foreign country are eliminated.
