Hello there
I am proposing to drive (towing a caravan) from Zeebrugge to Annecy on the 11th August. On the bison-fute website it is listed as RED, has anyone done this in one day on a "black" (or red?) saturday?

I think I will take a list of municpal sites near the motorways, and their phone numbers, so if it is that horrendous I can always give up, park up overnight and try again on the sunday, but has anyone tried it? It is not the first or even second saturday of the french summer holidays, what do you think?

Thanks for your advice, Christine

I wouldn't bother to do it in a day. From Zee just go down through Belgium & Luxembourg(cheap diesel)all toll free motorway. Nice overnight campsite here nr Epinal about halfway then just continue down to Besancon & follow signs to Lons-le-Saunier & then to Annecy.

If you look on map you will see its actually shorter after Besancon to go through Switzerland but this would cost you for vignettes for both car/caravan to use motorway. Toll in France both ways would probably be cheaper than vignettes.

According to Mappy toll Lons-le-Saunier to Annecy car/caravan is 33€ one way. Swiss vignettes appear to be 33€ as well & if you need 2 there would be no difference but slightly less distance.

Just to give you a comparison. Our trip there some years ago was on a Thursday in June. We left Calais at 8am took a direct route via autoroute all the way via Reims, Troyes, Dijon and Dole. We had a good run, no problems, it was or longest ever journey in one day but we gave up near Lons le Saunier where we stayed for the night. 420 miles, 2 good stops and arrived there at 5pm. From there it was a further 2 hrs to Annecy.

Think about it. It would be a murderous journey in one day.

We did Zeebrugge to Chatel 2 years ago......tip ' fuel up in Arlon, Luxembourg' it is so cheap here.We stopped in the Jura for one night, then across the Swiss border (Vignette chrage here)

If we've done Zeebrugge to Annecy, we've usually stopped in Savigny-les- Beaune(nr Dijon) for 1 night. I guess you could do it if you did Toll route all the way but it negates the saving in the fuel costs. Reims, Troyes, Dijon. as Harry B states.

Can I recommend Le Premier Pres, Savigny. You can pitch for 1 night in a beautiful village in the heart of 'wine' country, nip into Beaune, and take advantage of the ELe Clerc supermarche/ fuel just very near the motorway exit.

Annecy is beautiful.

AVOID the municipal in Semnoz, it had a drug raid when we were there, and is frequented by unsavoury locals.

Bon Voyage

I am travelling from Zeebrugge to near Annecy during August 2013 (Sunday 4th August). I was going to do in a day but have now decided to split it into 2 days. Is the view that it is better to drive through Belgium/Luxembourg and if so, is it worth avoiding the Toll roads when dropping back into France? The Via Michelin site seem to only add just over an hour to the journey but i am keen to know what it is likely to be in practice (especially on a black weekend in france)

Hiya, because I was towing a large caravan, I couldnt make the alternative route work out substantially less, because of the extra fuel.
Travelling on a sunday in France is great, because the HGVs arent on the roads.

Personally, I would go straight down through France because I couldnt make the economics make it worthwhile, but others more experienced than me may differ.

With regard to two days, I am doing it in two days again this year, I found the via michelin estimate of 10 hours to be extremely conservative. When towing, its more like 13, even without traffic.
Enjoy this fabulous area! I will pass you coming back up on the 4th!

Did Zeebrugge to Annecy inJuly about 7 years ago, travelled as far as Dole then found a site to stop overnight (think the site was Parcey) arrived at site around 6:30ish on the evening.

This then left us with an easy drive to Annecy (La Raviore) where we arrived mid afternoon.

Martin, I know just the spot.

We discoverded  it years ago, and ALWAYS stop there if we are in the area.

the sleepy village of Savigny -Les- Beaune. Just outside Beaune.

The campsite is called Le Premier Pres....lovely spot and much much nicer than the one in Beaune.

Check out the recommendation in the site review of this website.

The facilities are superb

The location is within walking distnace of the quiet village.

A great spot for a stop over or a base to radiate and explore Burgundy from
