Help needed please!

We only started camping last year and have a 6 berth dome tent which you can park your car in! We loved camping in the uk and thought we'd venture a bit further but not too far. We're looking for a campsite not too far from calais, we've two young kids but are used to sites with not much going on. Anyone know any good sites and just general advice for first time campers abroad, thanks a lot.

You could consider this campsite http://www.chateau-gandspette.com/ We have stayed here numerous times and it is certainly one of the better sites in and around Calais.

we stopped at gandspette for 2 days on the way back from southern france a couple of years ago, we booked through the cc ,we found it expensive, at over Ģ25 a nite, they only empty bins every 2/3 days then you had to walk 500 yrd s to put it in the bins. you are well away from the town .hence to say we havent used it again.there r better in the area. that was with a tourer, so i assume it would b less expensive with a tent.

We have enjoyed short stays at 'Le Vivier aux Carpes, at Seraucourt le  Grand, near St Quentin. With young children, you do need to be aware that this is a waterside site, so vigilance is necessary. Nor has it many facilities e.g. no swimming pool, but if they are not used to that anyway, they might not mind! We like it mostly for the very laid-back atmosphere and the convenience for Calais - it is only about an hour and a half's drive away. The cost last year was, I think, about 16 Euros per night, which included electricity. I don't know whether this is the sort of site you are looking for - France has so many camping areas, from the very simple to the highly sophisticated, that I am sure you will find somewhere that is just right!

Hi debjane and welcome to the site, can't really comment about French sites near Calais, but if you fancy going to Belgium can recommend Waux Hall at Mons, and Blaarmeersen at Ghent - this quite a bit bigger, and has restaurant and bar and shop, plus leisure lake - good for walks !

both good value

Each to his own. We have spent many 1/2 day stops at Gandspette to and from our holiday from between May and September. Obviously out of July/August we use Camping Cheques which makes it very good value. As far as the price is concerned I don't think you will find it much different to Le Bien Assise or Les Oyats and Gandspette is certainly, in my view, on a par with both of these sites.  I assume from the price you quote you have children which of course does tend to boost site fees in France as every child of 7 and up wards is generally classified as an adult. Can't say that I have ever taken much notice of the rubbish bins, I think they are as they are to keep them away from the pitching areas. With only two of us we don't create much rubbish as we usually eat in the site restaurant. You say there are better in the area but you don't mention which ones, might be helpful if you did.

Hi DebJane

You don't say how far you want to drive from Calais, our campsite is 40 mins south of Tours in the Loire Valley.

If we can be of any help, please feel free to contact us.

I don't like Gandspette either.
