after our recent trip to southern france i must warn you to CHECK THE SMALL PRINT! after about five days the car started to make a strange noise thinking it was minor i got it diagnosed to find out it was a knackered dual mass fly wheel and would cost 2846 euros to repair in france :( luckily a friend has the excact same car and had the same job done in the uk for just over  £1000, not to worry i thought, the rac will recover us, how wrong i was.they told me that as there was a garage which could do the repair that they would only recover the car to that garage and not back to the uk.i argued that the repair cost was more than double that than in the uk and the reply was "this is a common complaint from uk customers that repair bills are much higher in france but unfortunatly you have broken down in france and this is the only option we can offer" knowing i had fallen fowl of my own fault i declined and deciced to risk the drive home a few days later i know it is my own fault for not reading the small print but must say i felt held to ransom.oh and france is a big place when you have to drive 750 miles at 55 mph :)

Breakdown recovery is one of those policies where there is often a lot 'hidden' in the small print, and last year I got a lot of companies to send me their 'small print' before we decided which insurer we would use.  Often you only get those details AFTER you've committed yourself to taking out a policy with them.

I'm not sure, though, how many people would expect automatic repatriation if the car could be repaired locally - I certainly wouldn't. It does state in policies - even Red Pennant, which is considered the gold standard - 'Towing to the nearest garage' as the first option, rather than 'Repatriation of vehicle'.

Insurers also won't recover the vehicle if the cost of repairs exceeds the 'value' of the insured vehicle - which with older cars, and French repair prices, may be quite a common occurence.

You are right Val, after some other discussions on here recently, I've been reading through a lot of small print on the various recovery insurances that are available. This one the OP describes, is in them all. My guess is that French garages know this too and as soon as they see the van with orange flashing lights approaching with a car on GB plates, the prices are automatically inflated because they know no-one has an option. You can't even shop around for a cheaper quote can you - they've got your car and the truck won't go anywhere else.

You don't have to get the vehicle repaired at the garage you're taken too any more than you do in the Uk. Main dealers will mugg you for things like dual mass flywheel and clutch repairs wherever you are in the world. If you find a better price close by for a repair of that cost then a garage is likely to tow you there to get the deal.

I just renewed my breakdown cover from being with the RAC as their service is only worth having in the Uk IF you get one of their own out to have a look at your car. Too often do they just sent out a semi-mechanic from some random garage these days.

It's very hard, though, to arrange transportation of your car to a different garage, especially if your insurance small print says 'Recovery to the NEAREST garage' which it usually does.  It would also be hard to get 'quotes' for a repair from any other garages until they've actually seen and examined the car. 

Some years ago we broke down and were taken to the nearest Citroen dealer - our car was a Citroen - and because of that the new clutch was far cheaper in France than it was in England!  So it isn't automatically more expensive. We had a little garage repair our starter motor once and he only wanted the equivalent of £20.00. 

If you're on a campsite when you break down then sometimes it's easier to find a local garage and ask them about the problem.  Sometimes they will send a mobile mechanic out to have a look.

This is normal practice with all overseas breakdown cover. Why would they bring the car back for repair if it can be repaired in situ for you to continue your journey?

Understanding your cover by reading the policy is an important point on any insurance for any cover. If you don't - don't be surprised if you find you are not covered for what you thought.

Some breakdown policies may for example specify the car be serviced no more than x weeks before a journey.
