Anyone out there camped in Montenegro? From things I have read, expect facitilites to be basic but that is not a problem. Any site recommendations or tips would be welcome.

There is an English couple running a site not far from the Croatian border. It is in a rural location and run on eco principles. If I remember correctly it is named something like Full Monte. There is also a camp site in the bay to the S of Sveti Stefan which is clearly visible if you look at Google Earth it is called Crvena Glavica. Not stayed at either as I have friends living nearby so stay with them. Sveti Stefan is great for travelling out from as it is fairly centrally located for the coast and the old road to Podgorica and on to the mountains and canyons.

How are you thinking of getting there?

On the coast it can be very hot in the summer months but if you go up in the mountains the scenery is fantastic and is somewhat alpine in its appearance. The Tara canyons are massive and are used for rafting if you are into that sort of thing.

Beware the tourist season is quite short and therefore you will need to check opening and closing dates of campsites.

It may work out cheaper to get a basic apartment than taking a tent and camping.

Thanks for that, we are flying in to Dubrovnik hiring a car and have booked first three nights accomodation in an apartment. in Herzeg Novi  just over the border.  Did Croatia a few years ago and loved the coast and mountain variety it offered, expecting similar from Montenegro.
