Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
We've done it every holiday, for about the last fifteen years, but never on the 20th/21st July.
Just stop late afternoon, at one of the smaller municipal sites, and you may find very few people there. Friends of mine (teachers) holiday every year at that time and have never reported a problem in finding somewhere.
Sorry, but they don't use your route. However, the following might help you find a municipal site - and if they have a website or an email address you may be able to book.
Azay le Rideau (where Le Sabot is) is 144 km from the start of the A71 at Orleans so I hope you're using an alternative route, rather than the one the OP outlines, which is A71/A75. Otherwise it's a very long detour to find a campsite!!
Just looked at your route, and in fact you want the A10 towards Limoges not the A75 towards Clermont Ferrand and the easiest way from Azay would be to do the N road back across to Chateauroux, or carry on down to Poitiers, and then Limoges.
I once found a village close to the A71/A75 which didn't have a camp site but I can't remember it's name. Every other village (and town) does.
We came that way today, didn't even get "Caravan Europe" out of the bits box, just saw a camping sign, followed it and stopped. Not sure where we are but I'll go and ask. It's very nice and they've charged me 9.40 euros. Overnight stops really are as easy as that.
