A Green Card has always only provided third party cover (see here).  If you want comprehensive cover in Europe then it's one of the things that you should ask before you take out cover.  That's one of the things that comparison websites leave out!

I'm not sure what else you can do to cover yourself for the period you're away.

Maybe those of us who holiday in Europe should lobby 'the Meerkats' to provide an extra question:

'Do you need comprehensive cover for European travel'  (and then) 'If so give outward and return dates of travel'! 

That would solve the problem and the quotes would give us what we want!!!!

There are a lot of us about these days, so we should try to change 'the system'!

As with everything, you get what you pay for.

If you go for the cheapest premium then usually you will get the least cover.

Continental motorists pay a lot more for their cover than we do and the extra premium for continental cover reflects this extra risk.

Incidentally, since the advent of the EU you do not need to carry a 'Green Card' as such, merely ensure that the geographical limits shown in your policy include Europe.  Your existing Certicate of Insurance will provide evidence of the existance of the minimum insurance requirements for whichever european country you are in and must be carried with you.

I get 80 days full comp insurance a year, just have to make a  phone call with the dates and I am covered. been with the same company now for 10 years, they are no more expensive than any of the others on like for like cover.
