Val, I'm completly with you. We have always gone away the last two weeks of August. It keeps me sane during the hols with the thought of France at the end of thr hols! We also like the sites less crowded and we save money on site fees too.

We're not sure if we are going to get away as planned this year as my poor MIL has advanced ovarian cancer and I just cant get my head round leaving her at the minute.  Think we are going to end up deciding a couple of days before we're due for the off (18th Aug).

Last 2 weeks of aug are best - less traffic, lower prices, shorter queues - and a shorter run in to Xmas

I don't want to pour cold water- but honestly if any of you are planning Brittany in the next two weeks I would bite the bullet and go further south.

We have just arrived at Vannes, having driven up from Provence and heading home. The contrast in weather is unbelievable and the forecast here in Brittany for the next two weeks is as variable as it is over in Cornwall, and people who have been here for some time are looking glum.

It's yet another argument for NOT booking sites in France, as others have always said. I'm just sorry for those who can't change plans at this stage. But if you can, move even a day or two's journey south.

I can totally understand the not booking scenario if your using your own gear - but if your like us, who static or pre-errect it, then its pretty tough to do this. I would buy a caravan, but in all honesty i don't fancy towing it 12-14hrs to the channel ports before you even go on holiday. We are looking at Brittany for next july, but on this july's forecast i might just head away on a plane again to somewhere guaranteed sunshine

That's one of the interesting things about package deals - they've come down such a lot that even in school holidays they can (almost) compete with the cost of good mobile homes on a good site.  Thirty odd years ago when we started holidaying with Canvas it was MUCH cheaper to 'rent a tent' or even a mobile, than choose a package holiday.  My sister and her family (10 and 13) are going to Rhodes, last two weeks in August this year. As an alternative she looked at Eurocamp/Keycamp/Canvas/Thomson Al Fresco, first two weeks in August (which is what they'd prefer) and the price was not that much different.

In the package they can fly from our local airport (5 minutes from home - we pick them up), so no driving, and in four and a bit hours they can be there.  It's a place my brother and his wife have stayed at, family run, no luxuries, excellent reviews, and good clean accommodation, nice pool, and a variety of restaurants around at cheap to expensive, depending on what you fancy.

They love camping, but with the weather this year hope to get a bit better weather in Rhodes.  However, the weather during my brother's Greek holiday in May was definitely iffy, too!  They weren't in Rhodes this time, but on the Pelion peninsula and had only two days of full-on sunshine.

I think this year the weather, almost everywhere, is exceptionally poor, and I feel very lucky that we had a month with so few poor days.

I hope, for everyone who's about to go on holiday, that the weather improves, and if it doesn't that you make the best of it anyway!

Val, a package holiday for us is without a doubt less hassle and dare i say it cheaper. We are a disadvantage straight away as we're 400 miles from Dover - so in reality we're a full 10hr shift on a good day before we can even reach the continent. We're 2 hrs from Glasgow international airport, so in 8hrs (inc 2 hrs farting about in the airport after check in) we're in the eastern med...its very hard to convince a unwilling camper that driving is the best option

Packages this year are cheap, infact very cheap. We're £1200 B&B for 2 weeks in Greece for 2 adults and 2 kids, this will be a great holiday but personally i would still rather be driving to the continent, but we're virtually guaranteed 2 weeks of sunshine during the summer months. Canvas for next year are very cheap at the start of the school holidays, 2 weeks in Britanny at Les Deux Fontaines in a tent is around £550 with my work rewards scheme discount included - great price i think, but when you include the fuel, overnight stops, feeding.....its not far off the package holiday price. Then you get to the weather...so my wife seems to have all the bases covered
