Hi there we are planning a trip to Lake Garda can anybody recommend a good route that will keep us off the toll roads to keep holiday costs down (don't mind a few toll roads} We are going in an Autotrail Scout 25ft Motorhome. Have driven to the south of france before in same vehicle but not Italy. Also can anybody recommend sites on route and also a good site at Lake Garda

Thanks Graham

IIRC, we went via Black Forest, then stopped in Lucerne for a couple of days before going on to Garda. Depends how much time you want to take getting there.

We last went Calais, Lille, Luxembourg, Nancy, Colmar, north side of lake Constance, Landeck, Engadine valley, Reschen pass, Lake Garda. - it needed a short term Austrian vignette, but avoided French road tolls and full year Swiss vignettes.

En route we stopped at all those places (except Lille) and it took us nearly a fortnight to get there.

Your actual site at Lake Garda depends on size/type/price you prefer, bur plenty of reviews available for you to read this weekend. We actually stayed in Verona rather than at the lake, but our site there seems to have died.

We went Calais - through Belgium - Germany (Koblenz - Munich) - Austria (7 day vignette + Brenner pass toll) - Garda.

Stayed at
Campeggio Gasparina

Will be going back next year!

Hi Graham,
I think I have used every route planner there is available, however I have come up with that Google maps and street view is the best.
I am staying at www.piantelle.com. my ferry is at 08.09.12 at 14:45. I will be towing a boat, called the drifter, if you want to convoy it, then let me know. my intention is to travel as far as I can in daylight hrs. on Saturday afternoon, (around 4 hrs. driving) to hit lake Garda on the Sunday afternoon, so far the weather looks fantastic my email address is
