Lac Sanguinet SW coast not far from Navarrosse/Biscarrosse was simply perfect, very safe for little ones, nice and warm and clean, and surprisingly not too busy when we were there ( mid-August 2007 I think).

We actually prefer lakes and rivers to the sea. Lac de Serre-Poncon in SE France is lovely, also Lake Geneva. Any French lake, really, apart from the ones high in the mountains as they will be too cold. I'm feeling a bit jealous as I don't think we'll be able to get away.this year. Wherever you go, I'm sure you'll love it.

Lake Geneva? - Oh la-la! Lac Leman in France!!( But Lake Geneva to the rest of the world!!)

We go to a lovely lake near my mums in the Dordogne, it's called Grand Etang de la Jemaye, see here.

There is a nice little beach area with swimming at the north of the lake, but I guess if you fancy you could swim the whole lake.

We went in September, and it was still lovely and warm, although the air temp was about 32 deg at the time.

If you are in the area, there is a very popular swimming lake, with lifeguards in season, at Miramont. The municipal campsite, Saut du Loup, is on the lake too, right next door, and you can walk into town from there. We have stayed a few times, but not swum! Great for birdwatching, with lots of water birds, ducks, herons etc and we saw flocks of swifts and martins over the lake at sunset.
