This is my first post, I hope it works! We have been camping in France for the last 20 yrs but have recently upgraded to a folding camper and that, coupled with more time, means we want to go further afield. We are particularly interested in the Abruzzo region of west Italy and prefer smaller more rural sites. Has anyone any recommendations or knowledge that might be helpful?

That's an ambitious trip. We have friends who survived the earthquake which flattened Laquila two or three years ago. Their village, Onna, was devastated, and as their house was collapsing around them in the night they tied bed sheets together and got out of the bedroom window. We haven't been to see them since as they are still living in one of the little cabins which were put up as temporary accommodation. Do an internet search of those places and you can read what happened, but for your trip I'm sure you'll be as safe as anywhere in that part of the world.

Thanks for that, hadnt really considered natural disasters! Then again thats probably the right thing as you wouldnt go anywhere if you thought about what 'might' happen. Maybe one of the large coastal sites would be a better bet.

Campsite "vecchio mulino" near Opi ( http://www.campingvecchiomulino.it/english/index.html )
or campsite "le foci" ( http://www.lefoci.it/english/ )

On the shores of the Adriatic Sea I went to this campsite:http://www.costaverde.it/home.htm

It is a basic campsite, It is situated in Molise region near the Abruzzo.

We stopped in Barrea, the campsite is small with all facilities in the village rather than on site, but sanitary block is perfectly clean.

They advertise free WiFi but we didnt get it,free or otherwise.

The views from the pitches are perfect and its great for walking trips in the mountains, the owners are experienced climbers and have lived in the village all their life.We went in May and woke up to snow one morning !!
