It's a road we use twice a year - and we've now stored our caravan nearby.  The route does include a bit of single carriageway, but equally a lot of dual carriageway, and not too many areas of hold-up, apart from St Remy sur Avre where the N154 joins the A12.  It can be done entirely toll-free, or you can hop on and off the autoroute to get a few miles under your belt.  From Clermont Ferrand south it's free all the way to the Mediterranean and is proper motorway standard.  There are some long hills, but nothing too winding or dramatic. All the way are the most beautiful views, one after another, until you see the view unfold at the Mediterranean end of the Tunnel de l'Escalette just south of Le Caylar.   You can even avoid the toll on the Millau viaduct by staying overnight at a nearby campsite, coming off the autoroute before Millau and going out on the old route towards La Cavalerie.

There are stopovers all the way along the route - from Abbeville in the north, Pont de l'Arche just south of Rouen, nothing much worth considering between Evreux and Chartres, but a municipal site in Chartres, another in Orleans.  On the N154 between Orleans and Vierzon there are several sites - Camping Le Grand Sologne at Nouan les Fuseliers, and Le Sologne at Salbris, with two sites in Vierzon itself.

From Vierzon the non-toll route would take you cross country towards Bourges (Camping Robinson), then Nevers (municipal site), Moulins, Chatel de Neuvre (two sites adjacent to the road), St Pourcain sur Sioule (municipal Ile de la Ronde), Gannat (municipal site), then sites at Ebrueil (De la Filature), or Orcet near Clermont Ferrand.  Just south of Clermont Ferrand is the municipal site at Issoire, or Camping Grange Fort at Parentignat. 

There's a municipal site at St Flour and various ones between there and Severac le Chateau where there's a site near the Chateau, then you're near to Millau with more than enough sites in a lovely setting along the various rivers, from the municipal site at Aguessac, to larger commercial sites along the Tarn and the Dourbie.

Further south from there, the municipal site at Clermont l'Herault, and you're then on the downwards run to the Med (Pezenas).

We've stayed on several of these sites over the years, and will be doing again if we head that way at the end of August!
