depends where you are going, Groningen isn't very nice. There is a seal sanctuary on the very north coast that I've never made it up to. Make sure you drive over the Afsluitsdijk.....amazing.

If you're going to the province of Noord-Holland you should take a bike out along the dike between Marken, Monnikendam to Edam-Volendam. Very pretty, you'll see how the dike keeps the water out & the houses are well below sea level on the other side. Edam-Volendam is to die for, with its little traditional wooden houses.

And yes, take the A7 Afsliutdijk across the water to Friesland. Stop in the middle at the viewing point and have a good look.

And then visit the Dutch Islands, (Waddenzee Islands). Ameland and Schiermonnikoog are good ones. Schiermonnikoog is virtually car-free. Lots of woldlife. We saw hares running alongside our bikes one spring day on Ameland.

Liz

Our youngest son had a cycling holiday over in Holland in May, he went north over the Afsluitsdijk (there are cycle lanes!) and then turned south to meet up with us at Nuenen.

There are plenty of things to see and do, plenty for children as well, and most sites have children's facilities.

The Dutch are great people and very friendly, and most speak English to some degree.

The second big dam across the Yssel Meer is the Markerwaarddijk from Enkhuisen to Lelystadt. There's an open air museum of old Dutch houses and Dutch life at Enkhuisen (your young ones can dress up in clogs and costumes) , storks nesting and flying as you cross the dam, a good camp site on the Lelystadt side (Camping t'Opertje) and a traditional shipyard where you can see the full size replicas of East India sailing ships they have built.
