Hi all,
We are taking our newly converted T5 to Lake Garda in mid August. Myself, OH and two teenagers. It is really only two berth, but can squeeze the four of us in for overnight stops. We are taking a tent with us for when we stop for longer periods. Planning to drive down from Calais through Luxemburg and Switzerland, possibly stopping for a night in Luxemburg. We have no sites booked. Should we book motorhome pitches and are we allowed to pitch the additional tent next to the van for longer stops, ie at Lake Garda.
Are we being too adventurous for our first european trip, Any advice at all is very much appreciated!
Layla

Hi LaylaMay- welcome to the site. never done Italy( waiting for youngest to get a bit older!!) But if sites are anything like france pitching an extra tent shouldn't be a problem, it varies as to the cost.
As for availability it may be worth doing some research as to when "peak" season is over there- we do France mid-end August as it is tailing off there and no need to book- and as for being too adventurous Nah!! lifes too short i reckon- GO FOR IT!!!
We camped at Lake Garda last Sept, had a great time, it was very hot.
There are lots of campsites down the east side of the lake, from Garda town they seem to follow on. Gives you more choice when you get there, but it is a very busy area especially at the weekends.
With a camper van I don't think you will have any trouble using a tent as well. Always best to check with reception as some sites make an extra charge. Expect Lake Garda to be very busy as its a very popular destination for the Germans.

Done Garda last two years fabulous place to stay found it very hot indeed.. we stopped in Luxembourg at Camping Kockelscheuer easy access off autoroute and cheap fuel to fill up as you exit for campsite....we then stoppped at Obernai then on to Landeck (Austria)before going over the Brenner pass dropping down into Garda great times you'll love it.
Layla May - why make your mind up where you're heading. You may get as far as one super site, and decide to stay put. You can tour, go where the weather is best, move on if you get bored, and discover lots of different sites and area - or you can stay in one place and just chill out.
Just go for it. Friends of mine holiday in late July to late August every year, and have never booked site. You also have the advantage of a campervan so if necessary you can overnight on one of the many 'Aires de Service Camping Car' which you'll find in almost every town and village of any size, in France - and in other countries, and which are generally well signposted.

Thanks for all your advice, have looked at the Kockelscheuer site in Luxembourg and a site in Lake Garda called Camping Fornella, i'm still a bit apprehensive about not booking anywhere so might book the site in Lake Garda for a couple of nights.
Taffy8078 you said you stopped at Obernai, which ive just googled and looks a lovely town - where did you stay? Also which route did you take from there to Austria any details you can give me would be great and from there to Lake Garda
Layla may we stopped at Camping Municipal Le Vallon de l'ehn. quiet site and easy 5 or ten minute stroll to the small town which is really oldy worldly. From there we headed down to Colmar then cut across via frieberg and Bregenz to Landeck,to camping riffler and from there went via Innsbruck and the brenner pass to Lake Garda and Camping Soreno in Lazise which had again a five minute walk into the town.Got to say we've been to Lake Garda last two years and loved it and going to miss it this year as we taking a break and going to the Dordogne.Any other info you want don't hesitate to ask. What I would say is google the campsites on the Lake because some are not directly on the side of the lake.
We go the same way as Taffy8078 via Colmar as far as Landeck (Austria), but then always turn south via Reschen Pass rather than going forward to Brenner Pass. Reschen Pass is straightforward with a caravan so very easy with your VW - and very picturesque scenery and walking country at the top of the pass as you cross into Italy.
