someone with more technical know how could link you to municipal campsite directory- quite often they are near municipal pools!

 i would say the sites are only full until mid-august- and also if you are clever with how you research you can find sites which don't immediately come up with a google search & therefore can be quieter! i like to try local Tourisme sites of the area we are going they usually have a Hebergement section!- I would never say never too late- just be prepared to search a bit!

About 50 miles South East of Bordeaux - Camping Municipal du lac at Damazan - just off junction 6 of A62 autoroute but no road noise. It was 75% empty in mid july last year so I don't imagine mid August will be much different. A choice of hedged pitches or an open grassy meadow with trees - village cricket pitch on one side (matches on Sundays), lake on the other side with wooden decking, sun beds, diving platforms. No barrier, just roll in and park, and warden will come in the evening. Clean toilet block, pretty village, lovely gardens nearby, handy for vineyards, Canal du Midi, and cycling...

Here's the link to the muncipal campsite website .  Get yourself a good campsite guide such as Le Guide Officiel de Camping Caravanning, which has details of all 10,500 French campsites, and just go for it.  You can tour, go as you please, move on if you want, stay if you want - that's what's so lovely about camping in France.

There are also Aires de Service de Camping Car - which children probably not ideal, but there are some in lovely situations and worth considering for an overnight stop.  They're always well signposted and almost every town and village has one!
