we are thinking about stop overs in one of the major chains...(F1 in france), but the problem is they only accept 3 persons per room...anyone know if they strictly enforce this rule? I'm quite happy to throw down a SIM and camping pillow to save the cost of an additional room. Plus I'd rather have all 4 of us together for security.

Has anyone had any experience of this?

Not strictly enforced at many, however it would make sense whilst reception is manned to not all walk in together.

There are other budget hotel chains which do sleep four to a room, and most of them also have an en-suite bathroom.  Use booking.com to find them - you have an option to select four people in one room.  Many are not much more expensive than Formule 1 in price and some are actually cheaper!

When my boys were youger, we used to stay in B&B hotels in France as they sleep 4 in a family room. http://www.hotel-bb.com/reservation-hotel/home/hotel_search will help you select a hotel.

B+B has family rooms that will take 4. I've also used Campaniles, Ibis and Kyriads that will provide extra beds up to 4 peeps per room. I admit that they are not as budget as Formule1 or Etap
Try contacting the hotel directly to check.

I was wondering this, too. We have booked 2 separate rooms with F1 which was still way cheaper than anything else we could find but would save a lot more if all 4 of us could squeeze into a room for 3 - anyone else done this and been caught out or had no problem?

We use Hotel B&B - not a bad chain at all and they do have 4 person rooms.

I have looked at all the chains and not managed to find a single one with a 4 person room available :(

For the last few years we have used the Premiere Classe chain of budget hotels, they will do rooms for 4 persons, but only at selected hotels, simply go on the website select number in your party, and town were you want to stay, if no 4 room hotel at the town, it will show the nearest available.

Cost for 2 adults with two children in the same room is around 55€ plus breakfast at around 4€ per head.

We now always use Premiere Classe especially the ones that are located within the same grounds as a Campanile hotel, as Premiere Classe guests get 15% discount of the total cost of an evening meal.

This year we stayed at 4 Premiere Classe hotels, for travelling down and back to our fortnight campings in the South of France during July.

Average cost per Hotel worked out at £40 plus breakfast and evening meal.

Premiere Classe are part of the Louvre Hotels Group, and in fact there is a Premiere Classe at Coventry the only one in the UK that I am aware off, there are 230 in France.

Great hotels IMHO.

As for F1 (Formule 1) they were great value back in the day when you could get a room for 15€ when all the other chains were charging 30€ but these days F1 are charging not far what the other budget chains are asking, and factoring in the fact F1 rooms don't have ensuite, they are just not worth staying at, unless everywhere else is full.

We stayed in a Etap couple of weeks ago, on the way home. It was clean but very basic, I didn't like it as it was so hot in the room, couldn't open the window properly as we were on the ground floor with busy car park outside.

Anyway I'm sure you could get as many people as you like in the room, we booked on line and didn't see any staff. We had the breakfast in the morning, but again no one asked us for proof that we paid.

Formule 1, Premier Classe we have stayed in them all -and usually arrived after they are manned and payed with credit card on the door - never had a problem with staying 4 to a room - just booked it and gone on up and slept. Once we had 4 adults in a Formule 1 - Dad slept on top bunk, daughter and mum in double bed and son slept on floor in sleeping bag, had a good nights sleep. Had breakfast next day and away we went.   Quick cheap and no problem.   Just go for it
