ps, if you go on http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/ you can plan the journey with or without toll roads, ours is around an hour and half longer without tolls (around same mileage), we get to dunkirk at 0500, due to me being a scrooge with ferry fares, so are in no hurry as cant book into campsite till 1400 and its only 4 hours from dunkirk...

The only thing we'll do differently than camping in UK is a 2-pin conversion lead for our EHU. (although it helps that our bank account has travel insurance and Europe breakdown)

I think the true cost comparison is what would two weeks camping holiday in Cornwall cost , and what would two weeks camping in france cost.
We ignore food costs as we spend about the same in France as UK. We have to eat. But cheaper camp sites, free parking and cheaper diesel in france easily offsets a cheap ferry fare and insurance. That just leaves mileage distance - if you go a long way south you'll spend more. If you stick to the Channel coast you won't.
We gave up camping / caravanning holidays in UK long ago.

We went camping in the South of France back in July, peak season prices, total amount spent for the entire holiday for 3 weeks came to £2k. deduct the amount we would have normaly spent at home say £400 and the real cost of the holiday is more like £1600.
Value for money imho, I doubt the two of us could get 3 weeks on Zante for that kind of money.
We once did a fortnight package to Zante when our Son was 10, it was a great holiday, but a totally different experience to camping in France.
Would not want to go to Zante again, far to hot in July for us +45DegC! and all that faffing about at airports spoils the experience for me.
Also a camping holiday in France is a life style choice, it's not all about the money, as Jessie J once sang!.
Time to book then I suppose............................now where. We are looking to go to Brittany, it's not too far of a drive and hopefully should get some half descent weather. I'm going to just close my eyes and point and see where we end up. I could spend the rest of the year looking at different sites and reviews. Cheers everyone.

If you're driving from Calais don't under estimate the length of the drive to Brittany. It's a fairly long haul. It's a lovely area but weather wise will probably be fairly similar to Cornwall.
Have fun looking at sites. My favourite hobby, apart from actually camping.
Hi Savanne - yes we did thanks, it was excellent for the kids and we loved being so close to the beach. We had a great pitch which took our tent and gazebo comfortably with room to sit out. Really nice site in a great location and we didn't get lost finding it! Result!
