Were off to the Dordogne in about 8 days, Yippee. We get there about 2 ish on Saturday. Do the supermarkets still shut at lunchtime, for the weekend? Its been 3 years since we last went. We dont know whether to get some food in on the way down, Although it would be a bit cramped in the car. And I wouldn't want to carry fresh meat far.

Large supermarkets are usually open all day on Saturday - often until 9.00 pm, much as they are here and increasingly are open until 12.00 or 12.30 on Sunday mornings. Town and village shops are also usually open on Saturdays (though often closed for a long lunch hour between 12.00 and up to 4.00 pm). Many local shops such as Boucheries and Boulangeries are open on a Sunday mornng - but closed Monday morning!
The great thing about Google maps is that I just looked up to see the opening times of the hyper in Limoux (9 till19.30,Monday till Sunday) including fuel at 24hrs.
Colin, theres a LeaderPrice supermarket on the way into Sarlat that we were impressed with last year. A bit like Lidl and Aldi, we couldnt do a complete shop there but some of the basics were considerably cheaper than the likes of Super U and Lclerc.
Hope you have a great holiday.

Roll on the 27th!
I don't think the HyperU in Limoux is open on 'Dimanche' - perhaps for fuel but the shop was definitely shut on Sundays when we've been in the area. Perhaps you should check again if you're hoping to be able to shop there on a Sunday.

Your correct Val,it was the E.Leclerc I was looking at for Monday the 27th and it doesnt open on Sunday either !
You cannot always rely on what the internet says about opening hours. Our supermarket changes its closing hours between summer and winter.
We also read online that the Ikea in Brest was open on a Sunday and as we were in the area we went only to find that it wasn't. Had we not been in the area anyway and had driven the hour and a half there we would have been very miffed. Around our area there are no shops open on Sunday fifteen kms up the road Carrefore Market is open until lunch time. They are nearly all open at lunchtime now though.
our first trip to france about 6 or 7 years ago we went to a hyper market on a sunday.... it was a big complex thing and there was loads of people about.... we went and got our trolley and headed to the shop ... only to find it was closed and all the people were going to the restaurant next door ..... we felt so stupid trotting up with our trolley.... it was evident we were going shopping .... doh!!!!

Some are open Dimanche matin, some are not, some are only open at all on Sunday in the summer, also beware of public holidays when they are likely to be closed.
Public holidays are no problem over the summer, only 14 July and 15 August. Most of the bigger shops had "ouverture exceptionnelle" for the 15th in any case, and were quite busy. Even the hairdressers stayed open in the morning at 2 of our local centres commerciales this week but 14 July was very "hit and miss", some shops opened/ others didn't e.g. SFR and Vodafone closed but Orange and Bouygues stayed open! none had signs on the doors.

......................and there are LOTS of public holidays, on different days to ours.
Yes they do have more .... but I'm not sure 'lots' more! 11 'jours feries' this year as opposed to 9 'bank holidays'. And why would they be on the same days as ours?
