I think that the point here is that it doesn't matter how much cash you've got to hand if its a cards only after hours pump and no friendly old lady is to hand then you are not going anywhere (even to the ferry !)

The moral of this tale is like the wise virgins make sure that you have oil in your lamp (diesel/petrol/LPG) before setting off and take a spare can just in case.

And those cards normally are limited cards for that particular station or chain of petrol stations. So you are right: keep it filled up.

I always fill up at 1/2 or 1/3 of the tank in France. Gives me freedom. Filling up preferably at the supermarket when shopping.
En route to the destination normally is by day, so no problem there. Night driving would require a prefilled tank, plus eitehr filling up on the toll road or limiting the trip to some 500 kms.
I used to have a small extra can op petrol for years. Only used it for other people, e.g. stranded in the Scottish Highlands.

What is the position on Bank Holidays ? I am travelling to Eftelingh (Holland) via Calais on Easter Monday, and was hoping to fill up with Diesel either in Calais or Adinkerke (I'm told it is even cheaper in Belguim). Where / when would it be best for me to fill up ?

France and Belgium both are cheaper than Holland. On Bank Holidays most petrol stations will be closed in France. Belgium i don't know. In France as well as Belgium they will be open on the motorway. In Holland similar, but more will be open off the motorway, There are some larger (not even very large) petrol stations in towns (like in Zoetermeer where I live), that also will be open on bank holidays, sunday atc. On the motorways of course always is more expensive.
