Stay on the 'right' side of the road!!!

1) Tie a bit of string to the steering wheel to remind you. At about 2:00 if it was a clock face.

2) Have a nominated passenger (normally in the front) to double check for you.

3) Make sure the top box is properly closed. Oops! I learnt that from experience!

From the moment you get off the ferry, just follow the line of cars, it soon becomes second nature, and is far less stressful than driving in the UK. Just relax, have a great time.

They're carrying out a trial in France at the 'mo whereby ALL vehicles must display dipped headlights during daylight hours. You'll get a warning about this at your ferry port though.

Make sure you have ALL your vehicle documents with you. Copies are NOT accepted in case of accidents etc. You'll also need headlight deflectors, and the warning triangle.

  we went to france for the first time last year as soon as we drove off the ferry i kept saying "drive by the kerb drive by the kerb" and after 10 minuites i was used to driving on the right side, the strangest part is when you come back to england and have to start driving on the left again

2nd the tip by Lizex re topboxes. 

Make sure locks and latches are done up properly - ours flew open at 70mph on the motorway and snapped off the side hinges.  Luckily just about everything inside was strapped down (apart from a sleeping bag in it's compression sack and back of towels) and the inside spring loaded hinges stopped the lid flying off completely !

It was my fault as I hadn't closed the front catch and the wind got under it.  Managed to pull to the hard shoulder, got everyone out up the bank and ran back up the motorway to recover everything from the side.  Dread to imagine what would have happened had it been a packed UK motorway.

Two police cars were on the scene if 5 minutes - I think they were just passing (has anyone else notice that they French police always travel in threes ?   Was able to secure the box using the straps from the inside but had to throw it away when we got home.

Still, makes the holiday memorable !
