Hi
Please does anyone know a beach in the Montpellier area that has rockpools/lots of wildlife? It's our last full day tomorrow in Le Vigan and it's a shame to come all this way and not dip a toe in the Med.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

It's not a rock pool area - sorry, in fact I can't think of any near to Montpellier, but you could do worse than drive down to Aigues Mortes, which will be busy, but is worth a stop and a coffee,  then to Grau du Roi (NOT the Port Camargue side which is fairgrounds and pretty dire, but the 'Rive Gauche side of the town and park by the old port.  Walk down either bank of the river, (left shops, restaurant and hotels, right quieter with some quite nice buildings) to the sea and the beaches there are about the best you'd get - but rocky 'groynes' rather than rock pools. The beaches to the right side of the river are quieter, and there are lots of lovely shells to collect, but I'm afraid I wouldn't describe them as rock pools.

However, you may also see flamingoes as you drive down that way, in the Etangs at the side of the road between Aigues Mortes and Grau du Roi and the Camargue white horses and black bulls, plus egrets, bee-eaters and birds of prey.

We took my 90 year old mum in law there in 2008 and she dipped her toes in the Med (in January but it was her first flight and first holiday in Europe!).  She loved it.  Unfortunately it will be busy at this time of year, but perhaps a Monday is a good day to do it.  If you are there for lunch then the restaurant La Grand Sud on the left bank of the river looking towards the sea is a good one - but the Maitre D is picky about who he lets in, so dressed up rather than beachwear is more likely to get you a table.  It does a cheap and cheerful (12/13 euros) three course lunchtime menu (may be slightly more in peak season).   There are lots of other places to eat - from an ice cream, to a gourmet meal.

Thanks so much for that, Val. Really useful. Well done to your mum in law-shows it's never too late! Thanks again.
