We are booking a week in the Bordeaux region as visiting friends there for the first week in October. I heard Royan was a great site. We need somewhere that will let us take a small boat, has good facilities - hot showers/ clean, restaurants nearby and sightseeing.

You can't say "Royan was a great site". It's a big seaside resort with about two dozen camp sites within easy reach. The problem is that many of them will be closed by October so you need to check dates carefully as well as selecting from that list. And it's about 120 km from Bordeaux - is that near enough to meet your friends?

yes as they are near Massac. Good advice about closing dates though.
