Have just got back and have to start planning again! Really enjoyed Chateau Des Marais, but having been to the Loire 2 years running we are ready for a change. Does anyone have any recommendations for sites with about 6 hours drive from Calais? Our girls would love a good pool and playground, we would like a site where they could make friends (girls are 5&6) and not too large. Any info greatly received!

Hello Curlytoppers

I know what you mean, we have just returned from Le Letty in Benodet and n ow need to plan our next trip to keep us going over the winter!  We have been to Brittany the last few years via Portsmouth/St Malo and are now ready for a change too, so I will follow this thread with interest as we would like to try somewhere new, perhaps from Calais.

As I see you are in Wales - would travelling from Portsmouth/Plymouth be an option for you to get to Western france for a change?  There are some lovely campsites there with the sort of things you want.  Camping du Letty was fab in a lovely area.

Hi Curlytoppers,

If you are definitely using the short ferry route (Dover/ Calais or Dover Dunkerque) have a look at Kawan village Lac d'Orient near Troyes which is about 4 and a bit hours from Calais if you are not towing straight down the autoroute. Nice site with outdoor and indoor pools for the girls and a lovely new shower block (so important for us tenters). Site is across the road from the lake which has a lovely beach area.

Bar / restaurant not up to much but there are a couple of lovely restaurants overlooking the lake. The Pizzaria almost directly across the road and the Marinka restaurant is a nice stroll down the lake  and is very good. I've posted these shots before but as they say a picture is often worth a thousand words.

If you fancy a 2 centre holiday there is the Jura a bit further down and Lac de Chalain has 2 nice campsites (one at each end of the lake).

Have you looked at La Garangeoire at St Julien des landes. Think that may just be about 6 hours from Calais, 3 from St Malo. Been twice and its ideal for families with young kids.

Thanks for your suggestions. I think we have decided that we will have to drive that little bot further and have a stopover. We wanted to go to Annecy this year, but couldn't manage it financially. So we have decided to start booking it for next year. Lac d'orient looks good and we could possibly use it as a stopover.

Lac D'Orient and Garangiore are both very good sites and if you timed it right could use Camping Cheques.

Have been to both sites and they have lots to do for kids - would like to visit both again!

Le Pin Parasol in the Vendee would be great for you - perhaps a little further than 6 hrs though but not by much.
