Yup, I agree, we just had 2 great weeks in the Black Forest (see my thread a few days ago).

Definitely better than the Vendee, if you can do without the beach (easy for me, hate them).

However, I disagree a little about the language - I was expecting fluent english from everyone we met but definitely not the case, in my experience. It was never a problem but there was a lot more charades than I expected.

Also, make sure you have cash - very few places take credit cards.

I agree, we went to the Black Forest in August staying in Steinach approx 40miles from Europa park, we had a great time, great pool next door that we could use for free (although it got VERY busy!) We found plenty to do in the region, but not many places accepted credit cards and if they did minimum spend is 20 Euro's, with the exception of supermarkets. We never had a problem with supermarkets and they are very well stocked even for vegans.

We also found not many Germans could speak English or limited, my kids didn't enjoy kids club as the children reps on the campsite couldn't speak English!

As for the beach, yes I missed a beach holiday, but we spent more time at the pool teaching our young children to swim.  We did have a beach fix on the way to the Black Forest as we stayed over at Blaarmeersen in Ghent.  A campsite on a sports complex, the beach is located near the lake.  Our route to the Black Forest was: Dunkirk, Belgium, Luxembourg, France up to Strasbourg then into Germany.

Temperature was mostly in the 30's we had 1 night of thunderstorms during our 10 night stay in the Black Forest.

Yes - forgot to say about the credit card!! We ended up spending less this year though I think because we got a certain amount of cash out for each week and tried to stick to it. Also avoided paying too many charges by not using it all the time in the supermarkets.

sue00, I find Germany to be much less expensive than France, especially for eating out etc.

Yes - I know the exchange rate was in our favour this year, but we definitely spent less than usual. Supermarkets were much cheaper I think - we didn't eat out though.

Agree with the general view, we found that few people spoke English, and anyone who did tended to be young. We also seemed to spend a lot less than we did in France, but then the Euro was a much better exchange rate for us this year so that might have a lot to do with it too.

We must have been lucky - didn't have a problem with the lingo! Everytime I tried speaking German, I was always answered in English - grrr!

We are off to Muenster next May half term with the kids. We lived there when my husband was serving in the Army and it is 20 years since we left. We want to show the kids where their Mum and Dad first met and to see if there have been many changes.

We only have one week but we are hoping to return in the summer for longer and revisit the Mosel region, Harz mountains and the Black Forest.

We go to Germany every year and cannot fault it, way better than France, and the Germans are happy to see you!

Yes totally agree. We spent a fab 4 weeks in Germany this summer, the weather was great in the 4 weeks we had a couple of nights of rain other than that wall to wall sunshine. The 1st 2 weeks we stayed 1/2 hour from Trier so lots of places nearby to vist. The last 2 weeks we stayed in Waxweiler in the Eifel region the campsite was next to a fantastic municipal swimming pool. We found everything much cheaper than France, it was very reasonable to eat out too, unlike France. We are now looking into next summers holiday and Germany is looking favourite at the moment!
