Everyone seems to be heading towards Le Mans etc. Can I out a vote in for the northern route and the periphiques around Rennes and Nantes. We too use toll roads and in travelling the northern route, it;s half an hour longer drive and amazing savings on tolls. The savings on the tolls would pay for an overnight stop at a Formule 1 or a B&B hotel.

I must admit to being someonewho likes to get there and then relax, assuming of course I don't suffer from having a noisy bunch next to me.

I have asked for advice on sites near the coast in Vendee suitable for 14 year old boy and 11 year old girl and so entertainment needs to be good. Any more suggestions?

Thanks,

Del

You'd do a lot worse than La Garangeoire....cracking site, our kids love it!

Thanks Glyn, looked at that one and seems to have a better write-up than Pin Paradise which has been recommended (think that's what it's called) but a little further from the coast and pool/chutes don't seem to be as good. Am leaning towards Le Garangeoire at the mo. How old are your kids and what are the pitches like?

Have booked ferry for August next year with DFDS which seems to be one of the few with dates available. Paid £139 for car +caravan - is that a good price? Am a memeber of CC but there deals are not done with DFDS et al yet and she thought it was a good price. Decided not to wait for CC to get themselves organised as the price could easily start going up.

I have decided that we are going to travel to Dover for evening on the Friday and do an early crossing and travel to the site on the Sat and probably do something simlar on the way back.

There will probably be special offers on ferries when NEC show is on next month. Many got £69 for car and caravan but obviously no guarantee that will be same

Can't help with sites as didn't want all singing and dancing and went with smaller site right near beach near Notre Dame De Monts. There were loads in that are though and could see all the chutes and such like

If your kids really like the beach and the sea then don't dismiss the idea of compromising on slides etc for a walkable beach site. That was a huge plus for us

Was the £69 return or one-way? I got £69 each way.

I know what you mean about compromise and there is so much choice it is confusing. As a family we like both sea and pools. We also intend to drag my kids to some vineyards and sit0seeing as well as the beach and pools. I will continue reviewing them all and make a choice as best I can from the advice so far.

Return - search on DFDS codes or NEC show offers or something like that on here and you will see loads of posts. If you have already paid and booked then don't worry unless you can cancel without penalty

Sites abroad are very confusing as there is almost too much choice! Good luck

Also consider maybe Loire valley first then coast like we did. Much more Chateaux and vineywards within Loire than out on the coast

We stayed at Les Ecureils at St Hilaire de Riez this year, it has a good pool complex, right opposite the beach (300m walk), evening entertainment, and within driving distance of some lovely villages.

we've been the past 2 years and really enjoyed it, looking for something a bit further south this year.

We went to La Garangeoire this year and for a large part it deserves it's great reputation.

However!..... I skimmed over all the comments sayin g it wasn't so good for teens as my two are 11 and 13 and quite young for their ages and thought it would not be very relevant to us. Wrong!

The whole place is massively geare up for the under 10's. My daughter went along to the kids club (which is supposed to be for up to 12 years old) and we left before signing in as she doesn't really do colouring in anymore. She was told she was too old to try the 'paint a pony' activity and the magic shows, circus etc had no interest for us.

Everywhere is filled with small kids racing bikes along as fast as possible with absolutely no road sense whatsover! How there has never been an accident I do not know. I was nearly mown down at least a few times each day.

The pitches are large and very good. Shower blocks very good too. The staff were wonderful and the site itself really was lovely. Great if you like going out on bikes or like us, dog walking.

In terms of sightseeing or exploring, we found The Vendee very uninspiring and not very 'French'. Mostly just like driving through the English countryside. Couple of nice coastal towns and the Isle of Normoutier good to visit. Puy de Foy was a truly exceptional day out!

Don't get me wrong. We had a lovely holiday - it was just a little different to our expectations. And for that reason we will not be going back to that area or site, but going that bit further to The Dordogne.

Hope that helps somewhat.

We do vendee to Calais in one, but wouldn't do Calais to vendee... The difference? On the way home we know we are collapsing into our own beds, not having to pitch a tent.

Does it have to be a Dover/Calais crossing - LD Lines from Portsmouth to Le Havre provides a reasonably priced alternative (based on my trip last year and when you include the savings in mileage/time on the road).

Contrary to a lot of popular opinion, I love the Vendee and its countryside. From the Ile de Noirmoutier to the Venice Verte I find the area varied, very French and very relaxing... I could go there every year, to be honest!

This year saw us staying just a little north of the Vendee in the Pays de Retz (now there's a campsite and a village to return to! Must do a proper review on here!) but couldn't stay away from Noirmoutier and had the most amazing day wandering from the town to the beach and a gorgeous bowl of moules in a bar in the town! The Puy de Fou is amazing and also the Vendee memorial. A motor museum and a zoo ..... and those beaches!!! We also did the trip from La Bernerie en Retz to Le Havre in just a few hours, even in a 2cv!

Stayed at La Garangeoire many years ago (about 1996) and it suited my children fine then. Wouldn't want to go to that type of site nowadays as there are only 2 of us, both preferring a quieter lifestyle!

Hi, we travelled down from Calais to Vendee (La Guyonniere) without caravan  (tow car broke down before leaving, so we had to leave caravan at home and book static).  We decided that although perfectly do-able in the caravan, when we book next year, we will probably do a stopover on the way down.  By the time we've travelled to Folkestone, done the crossing, and travelled down, the last thing we're going to be wanting to do is pitch the caravan, sort water etc out, with two children in tow.  I agree with Zanygirl, doing it on the way home is a different matter - wouldn't have a problem doing that in one go.

Millsey, agree about the new to caravning and lov9ng it. I bought mine about 6 weeks ago an up until the weekend had only used it once. I decided to take them away Saturday morining to Norfolk and a day on the beach with a stopover. iT all wen very smoothly an the campsite I chose at Fakenhame Race course was lovely.

That's 2 nights so far, my aim is 30 in 12 months.

Regards DasherD comments on Protsmouth Le Havre, the times of th crossings were pants for what I want to do and the cheapest cost with Britanny Ferries was over £500 compared to the £139 I paid for Dover Calais. The difference in price equates to 3 1/2 tanks of petrol which equates to 1750 miles worth of fuel.
