Well done Emma - now all you have to do is enjoy the holiday! How nice to have such a long time away for a first holiday!

It's a fair old way, though, from Amsterdam, so plan your stopovers carefully.  Although Viamichelin suggests it's only 100 miles or so further than Calais it does lengthen your journey time considerably.  Calais to Vallon is reported at 9 hours 44 minutes - and that's without a caravan and at maximum speed, with no comfort stops in the timing.  Usually people recommend adding around a third as much again to take into account comfort stops and slower speeds when towing.  Amsterdam to Vallon is between 12 hours 05 and  13 hours 41 minutes, depending on the route you chose.  Take care in thinking about arrival times, and where you might be when you want a stopover, allowing for these extra times.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

After taking everything into account we thought it would cut out the long 8 hour journey by car to Dover.  We can sail at 5pm on the Sunday night, relax and have a good nights sleep then be refreshed and ready to travel when we dock in Amsterdam at 9.30am on the Monday. Takes the stress out of the UK driving, and the ferry was cheaper £495 return. Roll on August 2013, sooooo excited.  Just need to look into what sightseeing we want to do when we are there.  We are taking the bikes and will most definitely be hiring canoes. Thanks for you support you are a star!

You'll never run out of places to visit around either site - they're both in lovely areas, with fantastic scenery, and with masses of variety.  Let's hope the weather is kind, too!

You have plenty of time to research things that you and the family will enjoy, so I'm sure you'll have a great time.

I don't know if you've looked at ways to get from Vallon to St Leon, but I'd go to Aubenas, and then up the N106 to Brioude, then Clermont Ferrand to Brive.  Although it doesn't look as short a distance, it will save time overall.  The first section from Aubenas is a long uphill pull, on a winding road, but with plenty of passing places.  We've towed both up and down it several times. Stop at the Col at the top for some breathtaking long distanced views.  Then from about Langogne, its downhill again on a long (less winding) road.  I haven't actually done the Clermont Ferrand to Brive section of the route, but it's a motorway so should be the easiest part of the journey.
