Hi, has anyone stayed at Camping Domaine des Ormes? Not many recent reviews in the review section here and some of the reviews on tripadvisor are very mixed - Some make it look like the perfect spot - others a nightmare.

Are there many touring pitches, are they located together or are they dotted amongst the statics? Are the pitches small/medium/large?

Ideally looking for a site which suits older kids/teenagers and on paper this site seems to tick all the boxes although based on some reviews I have some reservations.

Any info appreciated!!!
thanks!
Sean

Hi Sean, I've stayed at the Domaine des Ormes quite a few times and it's a brilliant site for older kids/teenagers. It can get pretty lively at times, but most of the entertainment happens down towards the entrance to the site which is well away from the touring pitches.  The pitches themselves are fairly spread around the site (which is vast, about 200+ hectares including the golf course, so even when it's busy you feel like you've got plenty of space).  If you book early enought it's worth trying to get a pitch in the demi-lune area, which is to the rear of the chateau and overlooks a small lake and the golf course.  That said, most of the pitches are a decent size, and I think they offer some 'Castels' pitches as well with garden furniture and a bbq etc.  The coast up towards St. Malo (and St. Malo itself) are wonderful, so it's very easy to get away for the day (about half an hour) and you're not far from Dinan (medieval walled town) or Mt. St. Michel.

Don't get me wrong, if you're after a nice quiet getaway with a quintessentially French feel to it, then this probably isn't the place for you.  But if you're looking for somewhere that's handy for the Brittany ports, will keep the kids amused, and will give you the chance to explore some wonderful coast and towns, then I don't think you can go far wrong.

Hope this helps!

jonosdub, many thanks for your reply. That is exactly the info that I was looking for and strengthens my resolve to book ASAP :-) only problem now is to book a cheap ferry!! I noticed that Rosslare to cherbourg/Roscoff is double what we paid this year. Any recommendations on which port to travel from if I need to go by England? thanks again

To go to that area we invariably try to leave from either Poole or Portsmouth, to Caen or Cherbourg.

The drive from Roscoff is not too bad if you want to sail from Ireland.
time from the ports:
2.5 hours from Roscoff
bit less than 2 from Caen
30 mins from Poole.

This site was my intro to camping in France. Been every year since. To France, not Des Ormes. Revisited once. I would go again depending on the time of year.

We first stayed at Des Ormes in 2006 and have been a few times since. First few visits were in a mobile home and we really enjoyed the site. Last time we went was 2010 in our own tent, had a premium pitch which was very close to the chateau. Pitch was huge, had our own shed with fridge, bbq, patio furniture, our own tap and free wifi on pitch (can't comment on how good it was tho as we didn't use it). Was close to the showers and toilets (kept immaculate by the cleaners). Fab pool complexes. Recommended site to a friend who went this year and they loved it

Thanks Diane

Anyone know when sites start to take next year's bookings? I'm getting impatient :-)
