This may help you get laptop connection via a dongle in France

I went into an SFR (Vodafone) shop - there is one or several in most towns. I went to Lille and found a friendly shop who spoke some English.

They sold me a SFR dongle and sim for €30 and Most importantly registered it to me with THEIR SHOP as my address. I was then live with 2 days surfing. I took my lap top along and they loaded the software from the dongle for me and checked all worked. Please note - I had the UK vodafone software loaded and this conflicted - I simply deleted it and reloaded on return

THEN buy a top up card from the same shop and get them to activate it by phone

You can choose from 30 day - 60 Day and the more credit you buy the cheaper it gets. I purchased a 30 hour card valid for 60 days for €15. As you will find free wifi at some sites this was great for my four week vacation. I did not use all the credit. The same things apply in france - if you  upload or download it eats credit - use for email and surfing and it lasts for ages

Coverage was 1st class and I never failed to connect

The card will run out after the 60 days but next year just repeat the process with your dongle and sim card at an SFR shop
