Hi, I'm looking for a bit of advice.

I'm looking to hire a motorhome for our 2 weeks away next year. There's going to be 4 adults 3 kids (all under 5), I've not got any experience Motorhoming and wondered if somebody could maybe help with the questions below?

Can someone recommend a good campsite for a motorhome? i.e. I'm a bit concerned that without a car for travelling about it's going to be tricky de-camping to nip to the shops and visit places.

Also an option would be to hire a car while over there, does anyone know any good campsites near a car hire establishment?

Sorry for the probably daft questions but can't decide whether to hire a motorhome or hire a 7 seater (i'm the only driver and the lack of luggage space could be an issue with this option)

Much aprreciated.

Phil

France is pretty well geared up for motorhomes. Most towns and villages have an "Aire de Camping-Car" where you can stay overnight near the town centre for a small fee, and occasionally even for free. Most have electric hookup and water/waste services. Might be worth considering if you're interested in touring around visiting the sights.

Just a suggestion, from someone who's been to the Ardeche area a lot, it isn't really an ideal destination for a very large motorhome,  and you would need a very large one to accommodate four adults and three children.  The roads are narrow, there are lots of rocky overhangs and tunnels through the rocks in the southern Ardeche and along the Gorge de l'Ardeche.  There are lots of sight-seeing opportunities where access is quite tight - La Beaume, Balazuc, Vogue, and others where you'd have problems with a very large vehicle.  It might be better to think of hiring a mobile home, somewhere central like Vallon Pont d'Arc where you can walk into the town for shopping and the market, and then hiring a car locally when you want to go out somewhere.   You can hire large multi-seater vehicles - we were supplied with a nine seater minibus when our car broke down, and the kids loved it!

The campsite L'Ardechois used to arrange car hire - but it's a long time since we were there and I'm not sure if that is still the case.

Whilst Aires de Camping Car can be Ok for couples, I wouldn't think of using them with three children under five.  They'll need play space, good washblocks, and other chidlren around.  Aires de Camping Car are usually the haunt of more mature couples, without children.

If you want to stay on a campsite for 2wks then perhaps a motorhome is not really the best idea. For the cost of hiring one, I daresay you could hire a mobilhome on a campsite. Motorhomes, particularly in France, are best for travelling around stopping on 'aire du campingcar' ie short term motorhome stopping places as described in above post, local roads are quite narrow in the area you mention which may be a consideration if you are unused to driving a large motorhome.

If you want to travel in a wide area of France then a motorhome is good. If you just want 2wks on a campsite in your area of choice there is probably a better solution.

While I agree with the previous sentiments there are plenty of people who use large motorhomes for camping in the Ardeche. There is even a couple who have been in one of the large coach size motorhomes at Les Ranchisses on a couple of occasions when we have been there. However the motorhomes do tend to stay on site and only bikes or mopeds used for getting around on a daily basis.

I'd suggest that your best bet, and a lot cheaper, would be to hire a chalet/mobilehome and drive down in a 'normal' car. You could hire a 7 seater Galaxy in the UK, drive down with 5 in the car + luggage. Two of the adults could fly or train down to Avignon where you would pick them up when you have unloaded the luggage.

Cheers for the advice guys, as usual the forum has not let me down.

I think I'm going to look at hiring a 7/9 seater and maybe look into if they allow me to tow my trailer for extra storage. Another option somebody mentioned is maybe looking into buying a second hand mpv seen some Galaxy's and Kia Sedona's going for about £1000-£1500 so probably not much more expensive than hiring and if i don't want to keep can always sell on after the holiday.

Decisions, decisions! Then I just need to decide where to camp :-)

If you can buy a vehicle for £1500-2000 it may well be a lot cheaper than hiring a Motorhome. I was looking into hiring one, and for a week in high season for the smallest vehicle for three of us it would have cost more than €1100. Also although they sleep six the carte gris (registration) and seat belts is often only for four.

I have only just started looking though and there may well be cheaper Motorhome hire with bigger capacity.
