I wrote this in response to a thread on another forum, but a lot of it is 'general' information:
Like DianneT, our holidays are increasing in length and Red Pennant would have been too expensive for these longer trips, and once we reached 'a certain age'. We, like Dianne, opted to go with ADAC, saving money even on what we paid for just breakdown cover in Great Britain!
I did a huge comparison spreadsheet two years ago, as the whole breakdown industry is a bit of a nightmare. As the OP states, some companies (let's call them ABC) offering their own cover, give a maximum caravan length, but breakdown cover can then be offered by 'broker' companies, such as AGA, whose cover is actually 'delivered' by ABC and yet the maximum caravan length may be substantially different!
In the end, after weeks of trying to get hold of the 'small print' without actually having to actually take out a policy with anyone, and weighing up the pros and cons, we went for cheap but with good recommendations, with ADAC, rather than with some of the other cheap companies, whose users had several horror stories to tell. At least for our £76 (depends on exchange rate) we get breakdown cover for car and caravan, for twelve months, for any length holiday and for normal travel in Britain and Europe and this is whether driving or as a passenger if another car.
In the end I do believe that a lot of the issues are not actually with the 'level' of cover provided under the policy, but by the interpretation of the policy by the operator you talk to at the time, and that one man's excellent service can turn into another's nightmare, even with the same provider.
However, I would say that you won't get the same level of cover as Red Pennant anywhere - but unless continuation of your holiday under absolutely ANY circumstances, including five hundred yards from home, is important (we would just change our ferry crossing, for instance, and go later) then you have to decide whether it's worth paying the extra.
