Whilst Stuart is right about the excellent care provided in France, French residents have to pay a proportion of the costs (or rather their health insurer does). This is why proper holiday insurance is required. It pays for the parts of your treatment which would normally be charged to a French person and covered by their health insurance.
A friend of ours, some years ago, had a massive heart attack whilst in the Pyrenees and had to be helicoptered off the mountain, taken to the local hospital, and then transferred by helicopter to the specialist unit. Lots of treatment in intensive care, and then air transfer back to England with accompanying medic. He got a bill (Huge!!!) and this was covered by his holiday health insurance (cost £10.99).
Please don't assume that your EHIC will cover all the costs - it won't, and the bill could be substantial - perhaps much more than a car breakdown, repair and/or repatriation, and almost everyone takes out insurance again this!
NB This differs from country to country, and somewhere there is a breakdown of what is covered in each country in Europe.
