I'm traveling from GB to Portugal and struggling to find caravan sites open in Northern Spain until the end of October. Literally just looking for stop-over sites, so i don't need any fancy facilities. Just somewhere safe, as I've heard there has been an increase in caravan-related crime in service stations in Spain.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Try this website: http://users.telenet.be/leo.huybrechts/camp.htm which shows ALL sites within 15 km of the major routes through Europe and gives opening dates. Those open all year are shown in red.
La Rouletta, Near the Spanish Border in France at Urrugne is very good. About 8 miles from Spain. We used it for two days each way in April. Very close to the motorway on easy roads.
True ... but would suggest, if going to Portugal ... going via Potes would be a significant, if beautiful, detour ... and all the roads through the gorges are quite time consuming!
Whereabouts in Portugal are you heading? If Lisbon or further south, you could go from Larrouleta, which Frederico mentioned, to the Madrid area. There are at least 2 sites open all year, Arco Iris and Aranjuez. Then across to Caceres where there is a good municipal site, and it's close to the border with Portugal. We've stayed in these sites in winter and they're all good.

Joncar Mar in Roses. We stayed there in Jan for 2 weeks.
No reason for not using as a stop over.
We'll probably stop there next month on our route down.
