Just checked prices for Harwich to Hook of Holland for late April/early May to go to see the bulb fields. Cheapest day time crossing for car +caravan + 2 is £232 return if booked direct with ferry company, but only £127.80 return if booked with Caravan Club. A bargain.

Done the same myself yesterday - from Stena's website the quote for a motorhome and 2 adults came in at £196 for our dates, Caravan Club quote £122.82, quite a difference

It is a love relaxing crossing as well with none of the rush associated with channel crossings plus you are only a few minutes from the nearest major road to get you away from the port (although I do like the 'Hook'). The ships are probably some of the best ferries you will find. It is always my favoured route if going to Germany, Austria or further afield. Off the night ferry you can be in Austria in time for an evening meal.

Hi Birder99,

We used to do that route a lot, as I'm Dutch and used it whenever going to visit relatives etc. But more recently we've used the tunnel for going to France, as OH is not good on ferries and has been seasick more than once. However, we're thinking of just going to Holland in March, and it would save quite a few miles, and also we have friends not far from Harwich where we could stay overnight before crossing.

Decisions, decisions....

PS just noticed your "cure": 'A sure cure for sea-sickness is to sit under a tree'.....must tell him about that!!!

Ina - we found that Travella - a homoeopathic remedy available from mainstream chemists such as Boots - works wonders!  I used to be quite seasick even on short crossings if there was any swell at all and had tried lots of conventional stuff which always made me feel drowsy, or worse.  Then I found Travella, at the recommendation of a friend and have been find ever since.

We did give some to a very sick Dutch lady and her daughter on a rough crossing, and they were amazed how quickly it made them feel better.

Thanks Val, for that. Anything like that is worth a try, as you say, most of the conventional stuff has side effects like drowsiness.

Will note that down and if we do go the Harwich-Hook route will give it a go. I'm always ok, even on a rough Seacat crossing years ago, when a whole rugby team which had travelled to France for a game, was seasick!!

I've been looking at ferry / Eurotunnel prices for a while now as we are hoping to go to Holland for the Redhead Day in August.

I have just put our provisional dates In Stena Line's website and also The Caravan Club's website. Even though we aren't Caravan Club members yes, it has come out cheaper but taking into the account paying the membership fee I'm not sure it is worth it. Can someone tell me if booking through The Caravan Club gives you 'Flexi' advantage that paying a little more on the Stena Line website does?

18th August 2013 morning sailing = £81 (Flexi)
1st September 2013 evening sailing = £81 (Flexi)
Outside cabin = £51
Total = £213

Caravan Club
18th August 2013 morning sailing
1st September 2013 evening sailing (including outside cabin) = £185.40
Membership fee = £40 (direct debit)
Total = £225.40

£12 more but I do know that I will then have a years membership to The Caravan Club BUT next year our only camping trip is probably going to be these 2 weeks in Holland. Are there any other options?

I've done the same exercise (we are members of the CC), and for the crossings I'd put in, compared with Stena direct, our saving was £74 so for us the membership fee would be recouped just on that.

I didn't see an option for Flexi fares, but then I didn't carry on after the quote, as I only wanted a quote. Although I assume that that option would be displayed before the final quote.

I'd suggest the only way to find out is to ring and ask them, I'm sure they'd tell you even if you're not a member, after all, you MAY just become a member!
