We are planning a trip to Bologna in Italy next July to pick up our son after his year studying at the University. Does anyone have any tips on the best route to take to avoid the steepest bits of the Alps! Our outfit is a Vectra Estate and a TEC Travel King.

Has anyone routed through France to Nice and along the coast into Italy thus avoiding the worst of the mountains and the Swiss Vignettes? And can you recommend any campsites along the way

I have done that route in the past, albeit quite a while ago, but I am not sure its any better in terms of inclines. A lot of it is through tunnels on the Italian side
When we went to Lake Garda last year, we went down to Lyon then across into Italy via the Frejus Tunnel, and on to Lake Garda. Coming back we were heading for the Cote d'Azur, so went south towards Genova and round the coast. The Frejus was expensive, the tolls on the return much less so.
