Hello,
I have found a couple of nice looking places near to/on the Herault River. The area in particular is to the south of the Cevennes National Park on the D999. One of the villages of interest is Saint-Laurent-le-Minier and the gorgeous river waterfalls.
There appears to be a bit of a gap in reviews of the area and the campsites. I have looked/searched for info on the Herault on the forums.
Does anyone have any experience of the area? Or is the fact no-one has written about it the proof of the proverbial pudding!
Many thanks

We love the area though, but haven't ever stayed in the Herault Valley (except further down where it reaches the sea!)

The only problem with staying higher up the Heralut is that the valley is rather narrow, and on many sites you may get some road noise as both the river and the road (and the campsites) are in the narrow valley floor. The Herault is also one of those rivers where the river level can rise quite quickly.

We've 'done' the waterfalls, and lots of other places where you can access the river for a swim on a hot day.  We've also canoed on the Herault which is great too!

Thanks Val, I hoped you'd reply. It does seem like a little undiscovered area though!

I'll make sure to review any sites we go to.

Thanks.

One of our first sites was in the same area, on the Vidourle river, in Sauve.  That was a Canvas Holidays site and we loved it there, but since then, sadly, they had a bad fire in willow pollen build up around one of the tents, so Canvas and Eurocamp stopped using them, and then the site went downhill.

There are loads of lovely places for a visit -  the Cirque de Navacelles, and have a coffee overlooking the falls in the very bottom, St Guilhelm le Desert but early as it gets crowded, the Pont de Diable, further down on the Vidourle (I think), and if you haven't been already, La Couvertoirade and the Knights Templar villages are all worth visiting.  There are any number of spots for some 'wild swimming' if youre into that sort of thing, and loads of (steep) fantastic walks!

We stayed one night at the municipal at Laroque. Very quiet, just us and a couple of other tents. That was in May 2009. From there we drove across county through Brissac and Saint Jean de Bueges eventually arriving at the A75 to Beziers. I realise this road does not follow the river, but it was a truly beautiful, peaceful and wild area. We drove for about 20 miles and only passed one car. We loved it and have very happy memories of that day, stopping for a picnic lunch. Just so lovely. Recommend the area wholeheartedly. Next year I would like to follow the Herault and hopefully take our canoe for a paddle. I note Val's mention of the river level rising quickly! Something for us to bear in mind.

Can't help you with any other campsites. The one at Laroque was fine, if you just want a place to stay for the night with clean loos and showers etc in a lovely area, which is really all we are looking for.

We went very near to that route this year, on our way from Beziers to Ales - when I realised I'd left my passport at a site near Barjac!!  We had to return to get it, and wanted a different cross-country route avoiding any tolls - so did the 'ruler on a map' route-finding option!!  We also had a picnic on a rocky outcrop, in beautiful sunshins, but sheltering from the wind, and not a car passed us whilst we were there.

We love the area (we've included it as part of our August trip the last 5 years) and as well as the tourist sites already mentioned there are loads more swimming spots, waterfalls and caves in the area, plus interesting villages.

Undiscovered by Brits maybe, but can be busy at the popular spots on weekends (as Montpelier is nearby).

There are two pretty good fairly low key campsites a few KM from St Laurent alongside the river in/near Brissac – Domaine de Anglas would be my choice as the more laid back and scenic. But also check out Val de Herault.

Thanks for all the information. It certainly seems like our kind of place. Domaine de Anglas was on of the sites on my list, along with Le Val de L'Arre.

Thanks again
