We're regular visitors to Germany. The few days in May is 'Pfingsten' - Whitsuntide to you and me.

Perhaps worth pointing out that Whitsun is always on a different weekend, unlike our Bank Holidays. It is linked to Easter, and is always 7 weeks after Easter. Next year Easter Sunday is 31 March, therefore Whit Sunday will be 19 May. However, in 2014 Easter is really late, with Easter Sunday being on 20 April, therefore Whit Sunday, rather than being at the end of May, will be on 8 June!

Also, 10 days before Whitsun weekend is Ascension Day, which is always on a Thursday. People therefore often take the whole 10 days as a long break at that time.

The same goes for Holland.

We were given an excellent campsite guide on our last trip to Germany, this is the website with all the same info

Greetings Portia,

You said, "We found a gorgeous site this summer when we couldn't get into anywhere close to Carcassonne."

Come on, spill the beans, where was it?

Regards

To be honest the site might well not suit many people but it was pretty fantastic for us. The owner was very smiley (and addicted to his buggy). It was a small site with about 30 pitches and in the middle of nowhere. It must have been at least 4 miles to the nearest village. Finding it was a challenge!
The site had a small pool with a step between the shallow end and the deep end that was great fun to try to run up/stand still on. Kept us laughing anyway. The highlight of the place for the boys were the goats. I have managed to resist the urge to buy some for us - sheep, pigs and chickens is enough for now - but if we ever couldn't find them we knew they'd be feeding them. Made going out slower.

Can't remember the name off hand. Will look it up and post back.

I've just returned from Mainz (for the Christmas market which was OK). There is a good campsite on an island in the Rhine and it is an easy stroll over the bridge to Mainz city centre.

You can just about see it in this picture that I took from the City side of the Rhine. I think that most of the vans you can see belong to the market traders rather than tourists.

Two drifters off to see the world.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
