This frequently is quoted and appears to refer to an earlier requirement,as it appears on most of the tyre suppliers sites, I am wondering whether they are perhaps using it to sell more tyres!
It says that according to the aforementioned 1992 reg the tyres "doivent" etre a la fois, doivent is a less strict obligation and can be interpreted as "should", if it were a legal requirement then I would have thought that it should read, il faut que, indicating it is necessary.
There doesn't appear to be any reference to the requirement in the Code de la Route or Legifrance, the only official reference to it that I could find was in the requirements for their version of the MOT.
It's the subject of discussion on a lot of the french motoring forums, some say it is law others not ,I personally think it is probably a sensible guide and would try to adhere to it, especially as I saw there is even disagreement on a policier forum! The last thing I want on holiday is trying to argue the point with a zealous Gendarme!
