While I agree that there is a lot of reference to this "law" on websites that sell tyres but there is no reference to it on http://www.legifrance.gouv.fr. All French legislation is on this site.

I had my tyre changed in 2003. According to the tyre suppliers' websites the "law" was passed in 1995.

The tyre depot tried to get us to buy two a couple of years ago. The salesman only relented after examining the "good" tyre. They then put us back to the back of the queue again.

This frequently is quoted and appears to refer to an earlier requirement,as it appears on most of the tyre suppliers sites, I am wondering whether they are perhaps using it to sell more tyres!

It says that according to the aforementioned 1992 reg the tyres "doivent" etre a la fois, doivent is a less strict obligation and can be interpreted as "should", if it were a legal requirement then I would have thought that it should read, il faut que, indicating it is necessary.

There doesn't appear to be any reference to the requirement in the Code de la Route or Legifrance, the only official reference to it that I could find was in the requirements for their version of the MOT.

It's the subject of discussion on a lot of the french motoring forums, some say it is law others not ,I personally think it is probably a sensible guide and would try to adhere to it, especially as I saw there is even disagreement on a policier forum! The last thing I want on holiday is trying to argue the point with a zealous Gendarme!

Half expecting occasional similar problems on this year's 2-month tour round Europe, we took out Adrian Flux recovery - their service was BRILLIANT.

We needed them twice: once in Italy and later in France. Both times the guy on the phone (Anthony) was very helpful and immediately put us at ease. Recovery was quick and effective both times, with Antony keeping us informed all along and calling us back afterwards to make sure that we were happy, on our way again and had no further problems.

A superb service which we can thoroughly recommend to all.
