We are heading into Caen in August with our folding camper. Our ferry gets in around 9:30pm so we have elected to stay in a hotel by the port rather than stop overnight on a site.
I was planning on parking the car and camper in the lane to right of the exit road and leaving it over night. I would really appreciate your thoughts on the security aspects of this plan.
The hotel is literally over the road from the lane and it appears to be well flood lit. I will take the hitch lock and wheel clamp.
Thanks,
Graeme

We've booked Caen with Brittany ferries in August too. The Camping Municipal des Pommiers is literally two minutes from the port and has good reviews. They're used to overnighters arriving straight off the 9.30pm ferry. I've noticed that the car parks adjacent to the port are very open and are next to the restaurants and bars. I'm not suggesting there'll be any bother, but for he sake of a few quid?

To be honest its the not the money. The hotel is going to cost £105 for the night for the four of us. The issue was around putting the camper up at 10pm in the dark. That didn't really appeal.
how much would the campsite charge to allow you to put your tent on the pitch unopened ( with a wheel clamp on it )

Folding campers are popular in France so stealable. If it gets nicked it will wreck your hol, the chances that it will get nicked are negligible but as it is worrying you it would seem sensible to make alternative arrangements for an overnight stop. For the time it would take to put up the camper I would stop on the campsite, at least you will get a good nights sleep.
That's a very good point. It is worrying me already. Bigtoe suggested Camping Municipal des Pommiers. Can anybody pass any comments on lighting etc on site. It wil be dark when we arrive and putting up the camper is a little more involved than a caravan.
Thanks,
Graeme

dont expect too much we have stayed a few times 1st week of sept last year it was dark when we got off the ferry "4th sept" You can park under a light in pommiers but i do reckon you will need a good torch but its dead flat and reception at night will tell you to park anywhere you please.............
Thanks for the info. I am leaning toward this site. A couple of good torched and some decent planning we should be good. Should I expect a stream of tourers going to this site straight from the ferry?
This is for those of you who think you may wish to stay at Caen port this year i.e. 2013.
We've done so in a variety of vehicles i.e. caravan, camper and lorry. Each time it's been great. Once outside the terminal buildings find a space and park in it. If you are anxious about your choice simply check with the Brittany ferry check-in staff at the booths. Security does walk round the car park overnight several times and the gendarmes drive past too. The only downside is that the terminal is now locked overnight until about 06.30 so no loos.
Those with campervans may want to drive out of the port and turn right heading back to the sea. There is a proper camper stopover there just before the road bends left but finding room may be a challenge.
The area between the port and the camper park is good for leg stretches for dogs and children as it's fairly enclosed.
Obviously I take no responsibility for any mishaps that could occur. I'm simply passing on my views and experience.

Peter is very accomodating - we always stay on the first pitch as you enter so not to disturb anyone. we usually go around 18th aug and its very dark by the time you get there, but there raspberry jam is to die for. dead easy run from Caen.
