Traditionally its always the last Saturday in July but it depends what route you intend to take. Its not really something that would need to make you change your travel plans if thats the day you must travel. You can get traffic chaos anywhere on holiday weekends if you are unlucky so obviously travel weekdays if you can.

See this link from the Bison Fute in English website. Looks like the first 2 weekends in August are predicted to be the busiest.

it is the first weekend in august         by the end of august the schools have gone back and all hols are over                  each weekend will be busy especially in the south until after the 15th                july is the same and the last weekend is the killer    beware the ides of weekend driving

Years ago, we were stuck in a HUGE traffic jam towards the peage at Nantes. It was unbearable being stuck in the car in the heat for so long, even with a/c. It has certainly put us off travelling on the first weekend in August and also the weekend following the 15th August celebrations.

Is Assumption Day itself likely to be an issue travelling (Thursday  15th) or just the weekend following? Just realised we are travelling on Assumption Day itself

It was busy last year travelling to Vendee from Loire on third Saturday of August and quite a queue areound Nantes as mentioned above so would echo the advice to try and travel either weekdays or Sunday if you have to do a weekend

I've never found the 2 public hols, 14Jul & 15Aug themselves very busy, I think because everybody is there rather than travelling. Really bad autoroute holdups are generally caused by accidents & they do get bad ones in France.

the day itself will probably be ok   unless you are going beachwards    going north should be no problem
