We have always used the st malo route but the cost keeps going up and you have to book a cabin (reclining seats don't work with children and a very snory husband), so this year I costed up the Dover Calais with the extra petrol and a hotel stop both ways (less than £35) and it works out about £100 cheaper, first year we are doing it this year though so don't know if it will be more tireing a journey or not, will let you know but probably too late for this years holiday!

Yes i sympathise weeks now and we are still looking at where we are going to stay for our 17 day holiday. We are coming from the Manchester Area, and decided on the Plymouth Crossing to Roscoff.Thats all booked. Now sites we think that going to the farest site first then make our way back towards Roscoff probably using 3 sites. One site we have in mind is CAMPING LE CABELLOU PLAGE CONCARNEAU BRITTANY.Does anyone know how long it will take us to drive there from the Ferry port we will be towing a   Caravan.

We have stayed at Cabellou twice and it takes about 2 hours from Roscoff with a short break, this is a lovely site with great owners who speak good English and were very patient with my attempt at French, the first time we stayed we were heading south but the site and weather was so good we stayed 14 nights.

Credit cards should be fine for petrol from most stations including self pay pumps at some supermarket stations. Buy off the autoroute where possible same as in Uk where its cheaper at supermarkets rather than motorway service stations.

If it is petrol rather than diesel it won't be much cheaper in France so fill up here in UK before ferry and then you can find a petrol station when unhooked in France which takes one stress away.

Cards are widely accepted in France so get yourself either a low or no fee card good for foreign use. See this moneysupermarket link.. Saga VISA card could be a good one by the looks

Always carry some Euros on you as you would in any foreign country for small purchases or emergencies.

Also are you aware of all vehicles requirements for france (high viz jacket, warning triangle, sat nav compliance etc)?

Good luck and enjoy your trip

Yes we have most of the requirments buying as we go along and what a list it is.
Hubby said a guy from work told him to have a credit card for petrol cause if not the queue is long if you pay by cash.
We decided on plymouth to Roscoff as hubby did not want to drive for hrs and hrs.We have cabin booked as its an overnight crossing.
We did want to take the dog but decided to leave him with our son and daughter if we like what we see then next year we will probably take him with us. We need to look at one possibly 2 sites.Would we be ok to book other sites in France or would you book them here.We dont want sites that are too busy with kids we have grandchildren that we love this holiday is a complete rest from the hustle and bustle of the usual routine of work, etc. We have seen so many fab sites but they have waterslides and so much for the kids that we felt they were not for us, hubby likes to fish so a site for him would be great. We have been hooked to the computer which seems for ever .Hubby said a bit further down from this site would be ok so you know of any . Thanks pete

We are also in our 50's and have a son with special needs so our choice of site always has his needs in mind and Cabelou was perfect it has an outdoor heated pool which he loved, our first visit was in June 09 so very quiet,if you want to go a little further down say 3 hours from Roscoff, Carnac area Southern Brittany is nice and has many sites for all tastes use the search button and check the area i'm sure someone will be along with more advise.

Viamichelin is a great site for comparing journey times and costs.

We took our dog down through France some years ago, staying in various sites from Brittany down to the border with Spain. She was good, she took it all in her stride, but it was very restrictive for us. We couldn't go swimming together, we used to play tennis etc and tie her under a tree near us. We did take her on the beach once or twice in the Vendee area which was fine but it was in June and so very quiet. It was ok when we ate out as the French are very dog tolerant we used to pick a restaurant with outside terracing. We stayed in the Loire and I visited a Chateau whilst OH visited the local inn with the dog, he was delighted really as he much preferred that to looking at old buildings!
