we didnt get any bites in the Dordogne August 11 despite me usually being a magnet for mossies. I didnt really notice any mossies about to bite.
The worst bites we've ever had were in the Loire one May after a really wet period. They were so bad I just wanted to come home.
On the subject of antihistamines, it is worth starting them a couple of days before your holiday if you know you are likely to be bitten.
Last year in the south of france and spain we avoided any bites by Boots Soltan aftersun with insect repellent.
